A talismanic figure of Turkish and European basketball, Hedo (Hidayet) Türkoglu, announced on Monday his decision to retire from international duty, thus terminating an almost two-decade long career with the national team. Türkoglu, who just turned 35 on 19 March and was once nicknamed the 'Turkish Michael Jordan', has participated in eight EuroBasket tournaments, a record among active players. "I would like to announce my retirement from the Turkish Team, of which I have been a member since 1998, in order to make way for young players as my fans would understand," Turkoglu said in a statement, as reported by news agency Anadolu. "I will always be proud to have been a Turkish basketball international and of representing my country," the Los Angeles Clippers player added. FIBA Europe

Turkoglu, 34, has played on six teams. He’s been to Finals. He’s been the focal point of an offense, a sixth man, a role player and a point forward. Turkoglu’s experience is what makes him valuable to the Clippers and it’s why he has earned the respect of his teammates. “I forget how many teams he’s played on and everything he’s been through,” Blake Griffin said. “He was telling me a little bit about when he played for Sacramento with that team and throughout the years when he was with Orlando and Dwight [Howard]. He’s been on a lot of different teams and he’s played well and played kind of different roles in a sense on each team. He commands respect automatically from his experience.” NBA.com

“He’s comfortable in his position and his role,” Griffin said. “We’re going to lean on him to do even more than that, I think. The faster he gets into shape, nobody’s rushing him because we obviously understand the situation, but he’s going to be good for us.” Added Rivers: “I think Hedo will be earlier than [Brown]. He was in shape and working out and playing basketball. Hedo’s helped us already. You sign any of those guys. If somebody helps you win one game in the Playoffs, they’re worth it.” NBA.com

Already donning a gray Clippers long-sleeve shirt and black team-issued sweatpants, longtime NBA veteran Hedo Turkoglu made more than a week of speculation official. After working out for the Clippers on Jan. 9, the team finally agreed to terms with the free agent forward Thursday as they prepare to leave for a seven-game east coast road trip. “It feels great,” Turkoglu said. “I’m really excited, a little bit nervous. It’s a new chapter for me. This is my 14th year and I’m just really happy to be a part of this great organization.” NBA.com
