I know Glen “Big Baby” Davis said he was going vegan. John Salley: I had that conversation with Big Baby the year after they won the championship. (Imitates Davis’ voice): “Man, stop, you gotta be kidding me! Yadda yadda.” Then, he realized what it was. Do you know any other NBA players who have gone vegan, other than Big Baby Davis? John Salley: James Jones is vegan. ESPN.com

Caught in the middle was Jones, who had to deal with fellow executive-board members on Wednesday but also has to deal with LeBron in coming months. "LeBron's points were valid," Jones said upon his South Florida return. "He said the union had been in turmoil, had taken steps backward. The first step moving forward was reclaiming the union, which we did." To a degree, Jones said James accomplished plenty just by speaking up. "Make no mistake about it, our union has been a mess," Jones said. "It has been in turmoil. The general consensus of the players, not individual bodies, but the overall body, was that the union has lost touch with what its goal and mission was, and that the players weren't engaged. And we wanted to reactivate their enthusiasm." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

There are still some good people out there. Blazers coach Terry Stotts is outstanding; the best coach I have ever dealt with. And I have tremendous respect for Wesley Matthews, who cares so deeply and works so dilligently at his craft. I also still have a fondness for Batum. And through the years I cherish my relationships with Dale Davis, Stoudamire, James Jones, Joel Przybilla, Jarrett Jack ... there are some good guys. But somewhere in this bizarre transition when everyone has a blog, and people who can write 140 characters are considered journalists, the job lost its allure. Often times it's not about being right, it's about being the loudest. It's not about being good, it's about being first. And it's not about telling the real story, it's about being friends with the players. Oregonian

Interested in union matters and the direction of the NBPA, James had considered both executive committee positions comprised of players but concluded he would not have enough time at this point in his career to give the positions the necessary attention they require. James called Heat teammate and NBPA secretary-treasurer James Jones on Monday and told him of his decision. James discussed the role with several people and realized he didn't want to commit to something he couldn't focus on 100%, especially at such a critical time for the union, which needs to name a new executive director to replace Billy Hunter as well as vote for a president. Shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, the Heat issued a release that announced, "both forward James Jones and forward Rashard Lewis have exercised their player options for the 2013-14 season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed." Except . . . those are just two of the three Heat players with player options for next season, with Ray Allen the third. The player-option deadline is Saturday. The reality is that Ray Allen is not opting in. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Jones, 34, says 65 players have signed up thus far, with hopes of getting the entire league involved. He's also hopeful that he'll get the NBA Player's Association on board, having met with Vice President and Secretary- Treasurer of the Player's Association Jerry Stackhouse and James Jones. Stackhouse and James Jones were impressed with Jones' website and presentation and are backing it with plans to present it to President Derek Fisher. Jones is confident that Player Population will eliminate misinterpretation of vital and key information that come out of player meetings. CSNNW.com

With the Pacers seriously depleted, Jones got his chance. He went on to play well enough the rest of that season to get a three-year, $8 million contract from Phoenix in the summer of 2005. Jones is still in the NBA as a 10-year veteran for the Miami Heat. The Heat are facing Indiana in the Eastern Conference finals, the farthest the Pacers have advanced since they made the East finals in Jones’ rookie year before being decimated the next following season. “I was a benefit for me,’’ Jones said in an interview with FOX Sports Florida about getting his first real NBA opportunity due to the brawl. “I was stuck behind some very good talent in Indiana and with the suspensions I had an opportunity to play, and I played well, which I expected and it kind of propelled me the rest of my career.’’ FOXSports Florida

Jones was at the scorer’s table ready to check in for some mop-up time when the brawl erupted. He feared for his safety as fans began throwing objects. "You had things coming at you from the upper deck," said Jones, who said he was nearly hit. "Lots of stuff. Water bottles. Coins. Batteries. Just all those things. Guys were already scattered, but our team security did a great job of collaring us and NBA security ushered (Jones and some other players) into the locker room before it really got out of control."
