After watching his NBA stock drop, James Michael McAdoo is returning to North Carolina for his junior season. "I am ecstatic about having the opportunity to coach James Michael for another season," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said in a statement that was released shortly after the team's banquet concluded on Tuesday night. North Carolina is still awaiting word on whether Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo will return to school or forego their eligibility to enter the NBA draft. But Tar Heels coach Roy Williams during a radio interview on Friday provided some optimism that all might return to UNC. Speaking with Taylor Zarzour on WFNZ in Charlotte, Williams said “it’s still up in the air,” whether Bullock, Hairston and McAdoo would return. “But we're much much closer to having all of them back than we were last year,” Williams said. At the end of the 2011-12 season, Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Kendall Marshall all left UNC early to enter the NBA draft. Those three, along with the departed senior center Tyler Zeller, were all selected among the top 17 picks in the NBA draft. Raleigh News & Observer

He has a NBA body and has great quickness for his size. If he can show that he can score efficiently and keep his turnovers down, it would mean a lot both for this year or next year if he returns to UNC. ESPN.com

James Michael McAdoo, F, So., North Carolina Tar Heels: We detailed the concerns scouts had about McAdoo last week in our Maui Invitational blog. While McAdoo clearly looks the part and has a terrific pedigree, the result on the court this year has been disappointing. McAdoo, despite the much larger role in the North Carolina offense, doesn't seem to have improved at all over the summer. ESPN.com

On Tuesday night, McAdoo had seven turnovers to go with his 10 points and five rebounds. Williams isn’t the only one miffed by the performance of his big man. Most of the NBA scouts and general managers in the audience savaged McAdoo for his performance the past two games. “He looks good in a basketball uniform,” one GM told me. “But after that, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to like. He’s a pretty good athlete, but he isn’t very skilled and he doesn’t go hard all the time. There’s not one thing he does that really stands out about his game. He certainly hasn’t played like a top-five pick.” ESPN.com

A number of NBA GMs -- including the Celtics’ Danny Ainge, the Jazz’s Kevin O’Connor, Bulls’ Gar Forman, the Warriors Bob Myers and the Blazers Neil Olshey -- were in attendance. Overall, they are seeing the same phenomenon here that they are seeing everywhere. This is a down season, talent wise, in the NCAA. “If Cody Zeller, Shabazz Muhammad, Nerlens Noel and James McAdoo are your top four picks, it’s going to be an ugly, ugly draft.” Other than McAdoo, I couldn’t find a scout or GM convinced there was another first-round prospect here. If Kabongo plays, that could be two. But that explains, in part, why the field is so weak. ESPN.com

James McAdoo: It’s actually been an honor to just have the last name McAdoo. Especially going to UNC. Knowing how popular that name is in Carolina. And with Bob McAdoo here, he played for the Lakers of course, so people hear my last name and automatically think he’s my dad but he’s not. He’s my uncle. It’s just an honor to have that last name. SLAM: What was your relationship like with your uncle growing up? Did he have a big influence on you basketball wise? JM: No. I just recently started to talk to him after I committed to Carolina. But he definitely was good friends with my parents when they lived out here in L.A. When he played for the Lakers they used to come to all the games and watch him and Magic and Kareem and all them go at it. With him coaching the Miami Heat now, it’s always good to keep that line of communication open. Maybe with the chance of me being able to play in the NBA in the future, just talking to him and getting all the advice I can. SLAM
