Jawad Williams will be staying home. The Cleveland native has decided to accept the Cavaliers' one-year qualifying offer and will sign it this week, agent Kevin Bradbury said. The sides have been in talks for months with Williams hoping to secure a multi-year deal. But the small forward has decided to settle the contract issue in time for training camp, which starts Sept. 28. Cleveland Plain Dealer The contract is for $1.02 million, but is not fully guaranteed. But that is a position Williams is used to, as he made the team in each of the last two seasons out of camp with nonguaranteed contracts. Cleveland Plain Dealer |

The Cavaliers are playing a waiting game with restricted free agent forward Jawad Williams. They made a $1.03 million qualifying offer to the 6-foot-9, 218-pounder at the end of June. Unless Williams gets a better offer from another team, he'll likely accept the qualifying offer. Cavs general manager Chris Grant is hoping to add Williams to the roster. He could become the starting small forward. If nothing else, Williams will compete for playing time with Jamario Moon and newcomer Joey Graham. "We like Jawad," Grant said. "We'll get into training camp and see what happens. We have a qualifying offer out to him. I haven't heard one way or the other. Obviously, we'd like him to come to camp and compete and make his mark on being part of the team." News-Herald |

With training camp scheduled to open in four weeks, the Spurs on Monday opened their practice facility gym to potential training camp invitees. Among the first to participate in open gym workouts: Jawad Williams and Thomas Gardner. San Antonio Express-News The Spurs' new vice-president of basketball operations, Danny Ferry, is well familiar with Williams, whom he signed when he was the Cavs' general manager. Gardner, a 6-5 swing man, played the past two seasons in Belgium. He played collegiately at Missouri and had one brief NBA stint, signing a 10-day contract with the Chicago Bulls late in the 2006-07 season. "We're going to be looking at a lot of guys over the next few weeks," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "Eventually, we'll decide on the players we want to bring to camp." As of today, the team's qualifying offer of $1.03 million to Williams is binding. What that means is they can't take it back. Which is fine, they don't want to. As a restricted free agent, unless Williams finds a team to sign him to an offer sheet, he will likely accept that one-year deal and return. He may wait awhile until things play out, but ultimately he'll very likely be a Cav next season. Cleveland Plain Dealer |

The Heat declined comment on Hardaway, with Heat President Pat Riley apparently unaware of the interest. Among others in legitimate contention for the team's few remaining roster spots are 2009-10 Heat players Carlos Arroyo and James Jones. Others from outside the organization linked to interest are Tracy McGrady, Jerry Stackhouse, Eddie House, Keyon Dooling, Jason Williams, Kwame Brown, Jawad Williams and Rasual Butler. In addition, Orlando Magic free-agent forward Matt Barnes has expressed possible interest in the Heat. South Florida Sun-Sentinel James has already recruited Zydrunas Ilgauskas and former Cavs trainer Mike Mancias to Miami. His latest attempt, a source said, is to bring athletic forward Jawad Williams. He's a restricted free agent after averaging 4.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 54 games last season. The Cavs are believed to be interested in re-signing Williams and can match contract offers to him. Cleveland Plain Dealer |
