HoopsHype Jimmer Fredette rumors

Pelicans are not going to re-sign backup point guard Nate Wolters for the remainder of the season with his second, 10-day contract expiring on Tuesday, a league source confirmed. Wolters' departure could result in more minutes for backup guard Jimmer Fredette, who emerged off the bench in the Pelicans' resounding 115-100 victory against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night. "I don’t see him as a call-up. A guy like Jimmer Fredette can get his own shot off the bounce a little better. Jimmer also plays the pick-and-roll a little bit. The real comparison is Troy Daniels, from last year. He played at Rio Grande, which also played that kind of fast pace. His numbers were inflated. The difference is Troy is a legit 6-4, 6-5. This guy is just too small." Sports Illustrated

Fredette had a DNP-coach's decision against the Clippers and garbage minutes in the final 80 seconds of Sunday night's 104-87 win over the Lakers. Had Fredette, who played well during the exhibition season, both on and off the ball, lived up to his reputation as a scorer, his future in New Orleans might be more secure. And there are those in the Fredette fan club (their global number is legion) who will say he hasn't gotten sufficient opportunity having played in only 11 games. But 8 of 32 from the field, 1 of 8 from the 3-point line, seals his fate. New Orleans Times-Picayune

Fredette, who was acquired by the Pelicans as a free agent this summer, is still waiting for an opportunity to draw consistent minutes as a backup. He returned to Utah for Saturday night’s game against the Jazz hoping to get in his first game action since last week’s victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves. ''It's definitely tough,’’ said Fredette, who is averaging 2.8 points after six games. ''As a competitor you want to be out there on the floor and play. But ultimately that’s coaches decision.'' Fredette hoped to see more time in New Orleans this year but acknowledged before the game that it’s “definitely tough’’ not seeing more minutes. “As a competitor, you want to be out there on the floor,’’ Fredette said. “But ultimately it’s the coach’s decision. I hope I can get an opportunity just because I want to be out there playing. I just want to help the team as best as I can. But we’ll see what happens.'' Deseret News
