While the Nets have yet to announce who will be part of Hollins’ coaching staff, one likely option will be Henry Bibby, a longtime Hollins assistant in Memphis who spent last season working under Maurice Cheeks with the Pistons. Other names that have been reported as possibilities for Hollins’ staff include former Suns, Sonics and Kings coach Paul Westphal, Lakers assistant Johnny Davis — a teammate of Hollins on the 1977 champion Trail Blazers and a former assistant on his staff in Memphis — and current Nets assistant Joe Prunty. The specter of an NBA lockout combined with the Grizzlies' obstinate negotiating manner could cost them another assistant coach by the weekend. Johnny Davis, the lead assistant coach under Lionel Hollins, reportedly has an offer to join the Toronto Raptors in a similar role once his Griz contract expires at midnight. The Griz are working to retain Davis but an agreement hinges on the length of a deal, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Aldridge is reporting that Johnny Davis will be joining Casey’s staff as his lead assistant and Tom Sterner will come aboard in Toronto as well. Davis played 10 years in the NBA - winning a championship with Portland in 1977. Davis has been a head coach in the Association on 4 separate occasions: during Allen Iverson’s rookie season in Philly, in two difference stints in Orlando, and as an interim head coach in Memphis … when he replaced Marc Iavaroni. This fall will mark Davis’ 35th season in the NBA as a player, coach, or front office executive. It’s not yet known if Alex English will catch-on with another club. FAN590

After talking to people on both sides and sifting through the B.S., here's the deal with the Grizzlies assistant coaches. Johnny Davis, Henry Bibby, Barry Hecker and Dave Joerger have contracts that run through June 30. They all (including the departed Damon Stoudamire) signed one-year deals just before the team left for summer league last year. Even after making a 16-game improvement and locking up head coach Lionel Hollins, the coaching staff went through the draft without new deals. Management is taking a similar approach this year: slow to negotiate deals while it researches how most NBA teams will handle a potential lockout. A source emphatically said that the Griz intend to have deals with the coaching staff by the June 23 draft. Those deals, according to the source, will likely include full pay during a lockout if it occurs. But don't expect the Griz staff to go from being one of the lowest paid to receiving significant raises. Memphis Commercial Appeal

An ESPN.com article attempted to shed light on the situation but erred on how playoff bonuses were handled. According to sources on both sides, Hollins and the assistants each had playoff bonuses written in their contracts. Hollins received a set amount while each coach negotiated a percentage of their salary. For example, the lowest paid assistants received 10-percent of their salary as a playoff bonus. Other assistants received more per the terms of their contract. Memphis Commercial Appeal
