He said he isn't worried about developing -- or exacerbating -- a reputation. "No, I'm going to play the game I was raised to play," Barea said. "I care a lot. I compete. I'm going to get mad if things don't go my way. That's what got me here, so I'm going to keep doing it." Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Coach Rick Adelman said in his pregame interview he feels the same way, suggesting Love find a better way to express that leadership. “At this stage and age, you have to figure out how to say it,” Adelman said. “Because it’s going to be there forever. We dealt with it [Thursday], talked about it. I don’t think there is any reason to talk about it tonight.” That said, Barea admitted he was unhappy when pulled from the game earlier in the fourth quarter than usual and went to the end of the bench to cool off. “I think it looks a little bad that we were at the end of the bench,” he said. “But it’s something that we’ve got to get better at. I think it won’t happen again.” Love, meanwhile, acknowledged the frustration of so many close losses but said there was no locker room problem. “We just need to continue to be ourselves,” he said. “We all like each other. And we had a great shootaround today.’’ Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Two days after he called out teammates J.J. Barea and Dante Cunningham for not leaving the Wolves bench to join their teammates during time outs down the stretch of Wednesday’s one-point loss to Phoenix, Love said chemistry on the team was good. “We’ve been on the same page,” Love said. “Everything that happened is now internal. We’ve moved on from it. And we have a big game tonight.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“A little disappointing, you know?’’ Barea said. “I wish Kevin would’ve just came up to me, face-to-face, man-to-man, and said it. But it’s no big deal. We’re over it. We’ve got to play as a team and stay together as a team, so we’re done with that. We talked, and it’s not really a big deal for me. I just want to win games.’’ Minneapolis Star-Tribune

That said, Barea said he should have joined the team during the timeouts. “I think it looks a little bad that we were at the end of the bench,” he said. “But it’s something that we’ve got to get better at. I think it won’t happen again.” Cunningham declined comment. Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Although Love did not use specific names in the interview, based on the fourth quarter scene on the bench all indications were that his frustrations were aimed at J.J. Barea and Dante Cunningham. Barea, who scored eight points in 13 minutes, clearly voiced he was unhappy when he was sent to the bench near the eight-minute mark in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Cunningham recorded three points and one rebound in a season-low 11 minutes. 1500 ESPN

The rest: Rubio and Barea combined to shoot 2-for-17. Add Shved’s 0-for-4 night and the three made two of 21 shots. “Awful, our guards went 3-for-whatever it was,” Adelman said, adding training-camp invitee Othyus Jeffers’ 1-for-1 night. “They’ve got to come in and they’ve got to make plays. It’s not just the guards. The shooting problems carry right to the same thing: What’s your mental attitude? How are you approaching the game? Are you really doing this thing all out or are you going through the motions? “I know it’s the exhibition season, but we’re trying to get better and we really can’t get better if we don’t go out with better effort than we’ve shown.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Gustavo Ayón and Mexico completed their improbable run to the FIBA Americas Championship game with a 91-89 win over Puerto Rico Wednesday night. Ayón scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds to complete a magnificent individual tournament performance that crowned him MVP. Ayón also made the all-tournament team, averaging 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds. Puerto Rico and Mexico exchanged leads throughout the fourth quarter, and the Puerto Ricans missed an open three-pointer at the buzzer that would have won it. hawks.com

Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea likes what’s been happening this summer in Minnesota. While his attention recently has been on the Puerto Rico National team and the upcoming FIBA America’s Cup, he’s watched the moves in Minnesota and is excited about next season. “I think it’s great,” Barea told HOOPSWORLD after his final training session at IMG Academy in Bradenton yesterday. “Kevin Martin is a proven shooter and scorer, he gets a lot of fouls, gets to the line a lot. We signed [Nikola] Pekovic back that was one of the biggest things we needed was to get our big boy back. He’s a great, great teammate; everybody loves him in the locker room. I think it’s going to be great. Another year with Ricky [Rubio] healthy, he’ll be ready from the beginning. Corey Brewer brings a lot of energy; I think off the bench with me is going to help a lot. So we got a good thing going, we got to stay healthy. I’m excited to go back to Minnesota and see what we can do.” HoopsWorld
