Having a roster spot occupied by a hybrid player-de facto assistant coach is nothing new for the Heat. That was Juwan Howard’s role on the Heat’s two most recent NBA champions. What’s new this year is who’s occupying the slightly modified role: Dwyane Wade. “I don’t think he necessarily knew how much he would have to lead and be connected,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “This is a different team. He has to be the next level of leadership, to be another assistant coach. He has that experience, that impact with his voice. He’s been great in embracing that. It’s the most leadership that’s required of him since he’s been here.” Miami Herald

Former Golden State and Sacramento coach Keith Smart has emerged as a strong candidate to join the Miami Heat's revamped assistant coaching staff, league sources told Yahoo Sports. In the wake of a shakeup that resulted in the reassignments of Bob McAdoo and Ron Rothstein, Smart, 49, and Miami are discussing a role on head coach Erik Spoelstra's bench, sources said. David Fizdale will continue as Spoelstra's top assistant, and ex-Heat player Juwan Howard will move up to an assistant coaching job after a season working in player development, sources said. Yahoo! Miami Heat MVP LeBron James hosted a party Saturday night at Tao in The Venetian to celebrate his NBA team’s back-to-back championship. Before James arrived at The Heat Repeat Championship Party in a leather Miami Heat cap, he dined at Tao with a large group that included NBA players Damon Jones and Juwan Howard. The party enjoyed signatures off the menu, while James requested blackened salmon with asparagus before heading upstairs to the nightclub. Las Vegas Sun

Arison: “Juwan Howard didn’t play a minute of the playoffs, but he played a big role because he’s a quality guy they respect. When Juwan talks, they all listen.” So what if the phone rings next spring? “If it’s the Miami Heat,” Howard says, “I gotta pick up.” Palm Beach Post

Jill Martin, the MSG Network Knicks’ sideline reporter, is back in Miami. Again, she’s at the beach, wearing a bikini and a Knicks hat. The only difference this time is that the Knicks season is done and she can now hang out with Juwan Howard. Howard is relaxing after having scored 12 points in 17 minutes in the Heat’s final regular season game. He has yet to make an appearance in the playoffs. Dwyane Wade and LeBron James also enjoyed some time at the beach this weekend. The Big Lead

"Lance Stephenson?" James asked incredulously. "You want a quote about Lance Stephenson? I'm not even going to give him the time." Old-school enforcement ensued. Veteran Juwan Howard aggressively approached Stephenson before the series' next game. Dexter Pittman, a reserve big man who played for Miami last season, clotheslined Stephenson during the waning moments of the fifth game. "I think you've got to stop and wonder at that point, Is it me or is it everybody else?" Burke says. Stephenson is right. Indiana did win the third game and assumed a 2-1 series lead. But then James turned in a 40-point, 18-rebound, nine-assist masterpiece in the next game. Miami won the final three games on its way to a championship, and Stephenson learned something about tugging the tiger's tail. "It gave LeBron a little trigger," Stephenson says. "It made him go harder the next game. He responded well after I did that. Coach got on me a little bit and I just calmed down." Grantland

Chris Webber, one of the Fab 5 members, is in attendance at tonight’s National Championship game between Michigan and Louisville. There were questions as to whether or not Webber would and should attend the game. Thankfully, Webber decided to show up and possibly save us from 30 shots of Kevin Ware. Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, and Jalen Rose are also in attendance. The Big Lead
