Diez is no stranger to the U.S. and NBA players. "Last summer, I didn't do any workout but I was in Los Angeles for 10 days and practiced a lot with current NBA players like Steven Adams, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kelly Olynyk," Diez recalls. "It was a great experience: lots of shooting drills, one-on-one plays... It gave me a lot of confidence for this season. This is my draft year and I'm proud that NBA teams are interested in me. I hope I can show my skills at the workouts." HoopsHype

Van Gundy also said it is very unlikely that the Pistons trade anyone currently on a rookie contract, which includes Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Spencer Dinwiddie, Andre Drummond and Kyle Singler. "Not going to happen," Van Gundy said. "Not going to happen unless you get another guy back on his rookie deal. Basically, our philosophy coming in is first-round draft picks and rookie deals, you're giving those up to either get similar back, or if there's a star. If there's one of the real stars in the league, then obviously, everything changes. But other than that, no, those guys on rookie deals are too important, and we really like our young guys. So no, that's not going to happen." Booth Newspapers

Caldwell-Pope's offense, atop his defensive impact, more than negated Harden's influence on the game, though. He scored a season-high 28 points, hitting 6 of 11 triples, and added five rebounds and four assists in addition to his three fast-break shot blocks. Best all-around game of his young career? "I would say, yeah," Caldwell-Pope judged it, given the quality of the opponent he was guarding. "I kind of played on both ends tonight and I've got to continue to do that." NBA.com

"Caldwell-Pope got it and you know he doesn't have any heart, so we knew he was going to miss," Morris said. Van Gundy wasn't going to let such an insult slide. "I'm not quite sure - maybe he knows - I'm not quite sure what Markieff Morris has accomplished in the league that gets him to the point of mouthing off," Van Gundy said after today's practice. "I mean, I don't like the mouthing off anyway. "It seems to me you should at least participate in a playoff game before you do. But maybe not, maybe that's not the standard anymore." Caldwell-Pope was asked if he would remember the words when the Pistons face the Suns at Phoenix next month. "I'll keep it at heart," Caldwell-Pope said. Detroit Free Press

The Suns' Markieff Morris chose to focus on the Pistons' last shot. "Caldwell-Pope got it and you know he doesn't have any heart, so we knew he was going to miss," Morris said. Caldwell-Pope and Morris engaged a second-quarter shoving match that earned both of them technical fouls, which may have been the genesis of Morris' snark. Morris also got the late block on Jennings to help preserve the win. Booth Newspapers

With shooting guards Jodie Meeks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope both injured, the jumbo alignment is one hybrid method for addressing a short-handed perimeter. "As it works out, having Josh take some of the minutes on the perimeter probably helps us a little bit this week," Van Gundy said. "We'll see what happens. We've had exactly one day of practice with that lineup, so I'm sure that will be smooth." Booth Newspapers

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had to be helped off the floor in the third quarter and did not return Sunday in the Detroit Pistons' 91-89 loss to the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center. The second-year guard sprained his his left knee after slipping on the floor. The severity of the injury is unknown and Caldwell-Pope will be evaluated after the Pistons (2-1) return home. He didn't appear to be putting weight on his left leg when leaving the loss to the Wizards. Booth Newspapers

Will Bynum: There's a lot of new faces on the team. I really like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. He has the potential to become a great defender. He has a high basketball IQ and he plays basketball the right way. Chauncey said he was like a Tony Allen/Bruce Bowen type of energetic defender. Everybody was very competitive during the preseason: myself, Brandon Jennings, Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Charlie Villanueva... Everybody! HoopsHype
