HoopsHype Kevin McHale rumors

Rockets coach Kevin McHale would not directly say he would play Asik and Howard together again, elevating it only from a topic he would not discuss to “it’s possible. “We haven’t done it a lot lately,” he said. “They were effective earlier at stages, and this might be one of those games where if we’re having a heck of a time with Aldridge we might try one of our big centers on him.” Houston Chronicle

Aldridge had several monster games against Houston this season and averaged 26.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game against Houston this season. He also committed just four turnovers all season against Houston in 156 minutes of action. "He's a helluva player. He's a tough shot maker, he can shoot over the top," Rockets head coach Kevin McHale said. "We're going to give him some different looks, we're going to do some different things to try to get him off his game. He's one of those guys, that if he's making those tough turnaround fadeaways, it's hard (to stop him)." "He's a tough shot maker, and tough shot-makers, they at times can get you down," McHale added. "We just have to make him take a lot of shots to get his points. Where he's really hurt us is on the boards. He's hammered us with his rebounding. that's a big area for us. We've got to handle the boards." CSN Houston

"I would have done things differently in Houston," Lowry says. "I really respected Kevin McHale. I wish I would have had an opportunity to play for him longer. The things he was teaching me, well, I didn't understand right away. When you get away from someone, though, see it from the outside looking in, you go back and think, 'Damn, I could've learned some more things from the guy.' "I wanted to stay with Coach Adelman and needed to get over that. [McHale] came in with a different philosophy, and I wish I could've adapted to it quicker." Yahoo! Sports

"He's played very well. Noah should be defensive player of the year," McHale said after his team's shootaround at Moody Bible Institute. "He's done a great job with these guys. They've been winning a lot just on his energy and effort, his kind of determination and toughness. Those are all qualities everybody appreciates." ESPN.com

Rockets coach Kevin McHale isn’t surprised at the year Phoenix guard Goran Dragic is having. Dragic, who is averaging 20.1 points per game for the Suns this season, played for the Rockets two seasons ago, in McHale’s first year coaching the team. “I saw Goran do the same things for 20 games or whatever it was when Kyle Lowry was hurt when he was here with us,” McHale said. “It was very impressive. I have seen him do it before and (Phoenix coach Jeff) Hornacek has opened it up for him. He runs up and down the floor. He attacks. He is just a clever guy with the ball. He is a very good basketball player. I think that he has been for awhile.” Houston Chronicle

It was business as usual for McHale, who has been away from the team for a week due to the Dec. 10 death of his mother Josephine in Minnesota. McHale came in with a list of things to practice, went over his thoughts about the last two games, and worked on getting the Rockets prepared to host Chicago on Wednesday night. “It’s nice to be back,” McHale said. His players agreed. Guard Pat Beverley said the team missed having McHale on the sideline. “It was good to see his face. Definitely missed him,” Beverley said. “I’m glad he is back, and he came right in talking about the game from his point of view, which is good for this team.” Houston Chronicle

Parsons said McHale seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday and the team would try to keep it that way. He said even though the Rockets did everything the same way under assistant coach Kelvin Sampson while McHale was away, the team now is more complete. “Not much changed with our system or principles, but not having his voice, his face, over there makes a big difference, so I am glad to have him back,” Parsons said. “As players, we are going to do whatever we can to make him feel comfortable at home and continue to play hard and try to win games for him.” Houston Chronicle

With Howard on the floor, the Rockets average 98.03 possessions per 48 minutes and, with Howard on the bench, the Rockets average 100.67 possessions per 48 minutes – not a huge dropoff at all. Last season, McHale went on a classic rant about how difficult it is to play at a fast pace for 48 minutes, essentially saying players say they want to run but when it comes down to it, running at a high pace isn't so easy. "We're trying to maintain our pace the best we can," McHale said. "It fluctuates like everything else." USA Today Sports
