ESPN: Are you surprised McHale wasn’t higher in the Coach of the Year voting? Morey: I thought it was terrible. I continue to not understand what criteria people are using. Our own hometown paper didn’t vote him first, second or third, and it’s very frustrating. ESPN.com

And while McHale's supporters give Harden and Howard a lot of credit, they still don't understand how the coach isn't listed regularly among the best. "Moneyball has Kevin McHale underrated," Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey said. "It's a little upsetting honestly. I don't understand how that is the case, them having the third best record in the league, winning the division in arguably the toughest division ever on an NBA floor. Going into the year, you hear the Rockets barely make the playoffs. Usually all that factors into a guy saying OK, he has done a good job and he is in the conversation for Coach of the Year." Harden, Houston head coach Kevin McHale, the entire Rockets broadcast team and every partisan fan in the Toyota Center were livid at the no-call. As you might expect, the displeasure extended into postgame interviews like Harden's scrum, as captured by ClutchFans: On what Harden saw on that possession: "What I saw, or what I felt? End of the game, everybody's watching the ball. I drove to the basket and I got grabbed on my arms, and nothing was called." On what referee Ken Mauer said to him when they spoke after the play: "He didn't say anything." Was he surprised that no whistle blew? "Very surprised. You know, at the end of the game, I think everybody's watching the ball. Everybody. The entire crowd. Everybody in the gym is watching the ball. So, I mean ... [shrugs] ... I don't know what to say. It's frustrating, man. It's frustrating when you fight so hard to come back, when you get an opportunity to win the game, you know. It's frustrating." Yahoo! Sports

"We had no idea we were going to take him in the first round," McHale, vice president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves, says. "I didn't even want to go see him. I thought it was a waste of time. Then we went, and Flip Saunders [then Minnesota's general manager] and I were in the car afterward, and we just looked at each other. I said, 'Wow, we're going to pick a high school kid in the first round.' It was that obvious. "This was our first draft. Flip and I were both new. Our owner was also new. How do you tell him that the first thing he's going to do is sign this high school kid? I think we figured if it went bad, we'd just say, 'Hey, it was our first draft. We didn't know what we were doing.'" Sports Illustrated

McHale played through a number of ankle injuries (that required surgery) and debilitating back pain his last few seasons. He could have retired when Larry Bird did in the summer of 1992, but McHale came back for one more go around, doing so on a team that was clearly not a contender. There was a simple reason for that. “I wanted to go out playing, and we made it to a playoff series and we lost but I went out playing as hard as I possibly could. I found a little magic in a bottle for a couple weeks and played pretty good, then that was the end of it,” said McHale, who averaged 19.6 points per game on 58 percent shooting during that first-round playoff loss to Charlotte in 1993. “It’s hard. You’re used to being able to do things, you’re used to your body responding, and if you’re a good player you’re used to your body bouncing back and doing a lot of stuff. You never really thought it could not hold up, but at some point it goes down.” NBC Sports
