The Rockets brought in Trevor Ariza to replace Chandler Parsons and Joey Dorsey to fill the backup center void left by Omer Asik. But with Jeremy Lin, Parsons and Asik heading out, McHale faced another season of significant retooling, especially after the decision not to match the offer sheet to keep Parsons. “Well, I mean, hey I understand kind of why we did it,” McHale said. “I know they’re talking about flexibility. I like Chandler. He’s a big part of what we did and what we do. I’m going to miss having him, but that’s part of the business I guess. We got to replace not only Chandler, but we have to replace (Omer) Asik and we have to replace Jeremy (Lin) so we have a lot of work to do. Houston Chronicle

The Rockets are letting it be known that they’ll be able to move Lin lickety-split if Anthony commits, but they might not ever get to that stage. “The only reason Carmelo will go to Houston to listen (to the Rockets) is because of Kevin McHale,” one source said. “If the coach wasn’t a top-50, all-time player or was a lesser-name coach, then Melo wouldn’t even visit there. But he’ll listen because it’s Kevin McHale.” New York Daily News

The Houston Rockets are making a hard push to convince former Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins to join Kevin McHale's staff as an assistant, according to sources close to the process. However, sources tell ESPN.com that the Rockets recognize it will be difficult to land Hollins, who continues to covet his next opportunity as a head coach after his exit in Memphis following the 2013 playoffs. But Scola is a true basketball character, a superstar on the international stage for the legendary Argentina team that dethroned Team USA early in the 2000s. Teammates and coaches revere him. Battier cited him this weekend as one of his favorite teammates, and Daryl Morey said Kevin McHale is still asking if the Rockets could reacquire Scola. Grantland

Some people around the league felt that McHale should’ve been fired now, that he wasn’t the championship-caliber coach that this team needed. However, Rockets owner Les Alexander is said to be a fan of McHale and it seems the team wants to have some continuity on the sideline entering the 2014-15 season. Basketball Insiders

With Kevin McHale in the last year of his contract next season, do you have any concern about the “lame duck” issue? Daryl Morey: “No. He’s a great coach. It’s not an issue for him or for us. I don’t see it as an issue. I’ve never bought into (the lame duck factor) for any coach. Some coaches disagree, and some GMs may disagree, but he’s a head coach, and he does a very good job. Just like I’m re-evaluating and taking a look at what I need to do differently and better, he’s doing the same, and our players are the same.” Houston Chronicle

Kevin McHale will return as the Rockets coach for next season, a person with knowledge of the decision said today. McHale just completed the final guaranteed season of his contract, but multiple individuals with knowledge of the Rockets thinking have said management believes in him and wants him to have more time with a relatively new team that spent the season battling injuries. As the story from Ramona Shelburne and I related then, McHale can't be completely sure of survival after the Rockets won the Dwight sweepstakes but still failed to win a playoff series. The reality, though, is that McHale's biggest fan in town just might be Rockets owner Les Alexander, who's a handy person to have in your corner. ESPN.com

Locker-room unease has been bubbling during this series. And McHale's perceived shortcomings as an in-game strategist have been a talking point going back to his days on Minnesota's bench. But sources insisted again this week that, to date, there has been no tangible evidence to suggest that the Rockets have a coaching change in mind. ESPN.com

They still have to formally pick up McHale's 2014-15 option to remove any doubt. And links to Stan Van Gundy, Howard's old Orlando coach, are bound to persist until Stan is coaching somewhere else. ESPN.com
