But McHale didn't seem so sure the 36-year-old Bryant would be able to rebound from another potential season-ending injury, this time a torn rotator cuff in Bryant's right shoulder suffered last week in a loss at New Orleans. "Eventually, this catches up to you, man," McHale said Sunday before the Rockets beat the Lakers 99-87 at Staples Center. "Kobe's a great player, but I've seen other great players. When your time's up, your time's up, man. It's too bad, but it happens to everybody. "I wish him all the best. I've always admired him. I think he's a hell of a competitor, but everything comes to an end. In my case, my body just said, 'You weren't playing anymore,' and I said, 'OK.' " ESPN.com

When Hollins, who took last season off after his contract wasn’t renewed by Memphis, found himself without a head-coaching opportunity, he contemplated a return to the bench as an assistant. One of the head coaches he spoke with was his Monday night counterpart, Kevin McHale. Talks weren’t extensive and he was never offered a spot on McHale’s staff according to Hollins, who just wanted to be back in the NBA. It was more of an exchange of philosophies. New York Daily News

Smith scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his Houston debut, which resulted in a win over the Memphis Grizzlies. He was then given a spot in his new team’s starting lineup, but after producing little there in his last four games, Rockets head coach Kevin McHale sent him back to the bench. The Rockets released rookie center Tarik Black on Friday to make room for veteran forward Josh Smith, but they also praised Black’s longshot success in making the roster and contributing as the fill-in starting center when Dwight Howard was out. “Tarik did a great job,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. “I told him he’ll be picked up in our league. I told him in preseason, I said ‘Tarik, you have to go out and open people’s eyes. You didn’t get drafted.’ But he came in and had (15) rebounds in a (preseason) game. Everybody around the league is saying, ‘Dang, what did we miss on Tarik Black?’ “He’s on people’s radar. He’ll get another job. He’s a great kid. I really liked coaching him. A wonderful young man. We’re going to miss him. It’s a tough business this league.” Houston Chronicle
