Malcolm Thomas has a tough decision to make. The 76ers reserve power forward has been playing with fluid on his left knee for the last week in a half. He had an MRI on Tuesday. If he decides to have surgery, the 6-foot-9, 225-pounder will be sidelined four weeks. If not, he'll continue to play in pain. "I had it drained last week, Thomas said, "and it swelled back up on me . . .. [The knee] is just filled up. I got cartilage just floating around." Thomas, a fourth-year veteran, said the surgery would involve having his knee cleaned out. "I never had one before," Thomas said of surgery. "I have to choose wisely." Philadelphia Inquirer

Malcolm Thomas was set to leave on Tuesday to play basketball in China. The 25-year-old had an offer to play in the country’s professional league, which begins next month. Then he received a phone call on Saturday morning from Brett Brown. The Sixers head coach told Thomas that there was a chance to play decent minutes on his young team. Thomas has played parts of three NBA seasons as a deep reserve. This, he said, was a chance he could not pass on. Philadelphia Inquirer

Instead of China, Thomas will fly Tuesday with the Sixers to Indianapolis in advance of Wednesday’s season-opener against the Pacers. Thomas arrived in Philadelphia on Sunday and signed with the team before Monday’s practice. “It’s a great feeling. It’s a really great feeling,” said Thomas. “I feel like I’ve been working on it this whole time. It just never happened. And now that it’s here I want to take full advantage.” Philadelphia Inquirer
