The NBA has released its list of participants for this year’s Draft Combine, which will be held in Chicago from May 12-17. While there are plenty of interesting lottery-pick level prospects expected to attend, the guys near the tops of most teams’ draft boards are noticeably absent from the list. Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor are the names frequently discussed as the top two overall picks, and neither will attend. Same goes for international prospects like Emanuel Mudiay, Mario Hezonja and Kristaps Porzingis, all of whom project as lottery picks in more than one of the respected mock drafts that exist. Be sure about this: If the Pistons wind up drafting one of the two players it's assumed Van Gundy hopped the pond to study – Mario Hezonja of Croatia and Kristaps Porzingis of Latvia – they'll be comfortable every appropriate question that leads to the conclusion he's their best option will have been asked and answered. Bower, whose experience with European players goes back to his early days as a Marist assistant coach when Rik Smits was recruited to play there from Netherlands, says the NBA has learned much about the evaluation process by experience. "The comparisons are much easier to make and the levels of competition are much easier to round off today more so than 10 to 15 years ago," he said. NBA.com

Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy is looking for a few big men who can shoot. That's why he and general manager Jeff Bowers are in Spain looking at Mario Hezonja (6-foot-8) and Kristaps Porzingis (7-1). Both have the ability to shoot from the outside. The downside is both are immature and lack NBA bodies to survive an 82-game season. But the Pistons are looking for a boost to their 3-point shooting, which ranked 17th in percentage (34.4). Van Gundy said he wanted the team to shoot at least 36 percent. Detroit News

Last Valentine's Day evening, Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Zach LaVine wowed the crowd at Barclays Center and the millions of people watching the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at home with a series of aerobatic wonders. The next day, the story goes, Mario Hezonja did every single one of LaVine's dunks during his FC Barcelona team's practice. "Maybe not as high," a source said, "but he did them." NBA.com

"He's got a little swagger to him," a Southeast Division executive said. "...I think those Euro kids have to have some of that coming over here. He's awfully gifted. He can guard okay, and he's a capable shooter and a good passer. He checks off a lot of boxes that you're looking for in a wing. He allows how he's playing on the offensive end to determine how much effort he's going to give you defensively. But he's big. Agile for his size. He has a little nastiness to him that will serve him well if he decides to compete at the defensive end." NBA.com

Mario Hezonja said he never told Croatian media he "should be the first pick of the next NBA draft”. “These are not my words. It is not the first time this happens. Now they used my words out of context. I want people to know that I talk (with my performaces) on the court. I don’t know anything about the draft or the NBA. I don’t know what will happen”.
