Clippers forward Matt Barnes said Friday he will continue using a racial epithet he asserts has become commonplace in today's culture, two days after he apologized for using the word on Twitter and also was fined by the NBA for it. Barnes, speaking to reporters before Friday's practice, attempted to justify use of the N-word, saying the meaning of it can be derived solely by the context in which it is used. "The word I used is a word that's used on the court, used in the locker room, used amongst my friends and family; it's a regular word to me," Barnes said. "I think my mistake was using it in a social manner, which I regret and I apologize for it. But you guys have to get used to it." ESPN.com

Matt Barnes: "I have gotten into altercations with other guys that I'm friends with or that I'm cool with, and after the game we either shake hands or a phone call would take place. But I don't like Serge Ibaka, so I wouldn't apologize to him. That's just someone I don't like. But I own up to what I tweeted, and it wasn't right. It was in the heat of the moment, and I really didn't think things fully through. As soon as I sent it, once I started driving home, I'm like, 'That's probably not going to be too good.'" Matt Barnes: "I think they have a different set of rules for me, New York Knicks forward Metta World Peace and a couple of other guys. I think our fines are always blown out of proportion. Everything we do through the media is blown out of proportion. When they said I didn't leave the court in an orderly fashion on Wednesday night, all I did was when I was walking to the locker room, I picked my kids up right behind our bench and walked them to our locker room. It wasn't like I stayed on the court and tried to go at a ref or I was arguing with a fan or anything like that." Bleacher Report

Matt Barnes: I'd like to take a second to apologize to the #LACorganization, my #Teammates & #CoachingStaff & the #ClipFans.. For my actions. Not only on the court, but off.. I was completely wrong for pushing Ibaka & then for what I tweeted following the altercation. I've been doing this for to long to let my emotions get the best of me.. My poor choice of words & timing do not reflectwWho or what I am about.. It was very selfish on my part to make this situation about me instead of my teammates that fought their hearts out & earned a big win against a tough okc team.. Now I could have took the easy way out & said, "My twitter was hacked". But that's not what I'm about, I accept full responsibility for all my inappropriate action last night & I am truly sorry! Twitter

Barnes' teammates came to his defense after the Clippers' 111-103 win. "One of the best teammates I've ever had. Matt has a big heart. He goes out there and competes every night. Not scared of nothing," said Chris Paul, who hadn't seen the tweet. "We appreciate what Matt does for us, and he's a great teammate," Griffin said. "We've got his back, and he's got ours." ESPN.com
