As he lounged courtside at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday night, chatting with Trail Blazers assistant coaches, shaking hands with reporters and debating team broadcasters about whether or not single-digit temperatures truly are cold, Meyers Leonard was more than willing to share a little good news. “I’m getting better daily, there’s no doubt about that,” he said, before the Blazers lost to the Nuggets. “I’ve made a lot of progress.” Oregonian

Following the game, Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts did something he has never done during his brief tenure as the team's coach...he called out one of his players. “He (Meyers Leonard) needs to work on his individual post defense,” Stotts said. Gortat scored on him, Jermaine O'Neal scored on him. He's trying, but right now, he's a poor post defender one-on-one.” Stotts is clearly trying to send a message with those comments. But you won't hear Leonard disagreeing with his coach's critique. “I got to get better at defense,” Leonard admitted. “It's a learning process. I got to have better anticipation, better everything. So we just as a team, got to get better and definitely for myself.” CSNNW.com

Has your mother had surgery? [Ed. note: Leonard's mother has chronic back pain that prevents her from working, according to this piece by Mike McGraw of DailyHerald.com.] Meyers Leonard: "No. We're working on that. Basically have her health insurance all wrapped up. Getting quotes on that. I'm trying to schedule a neurosurgeon for her so we can figure out if we can go in and do some surgery, or get on medication. Even then, she's trying to ween off medication and get back to her normal life." Blazers Edge

Remember when the Portland Trail Blazers drafted the 7-1 Meyers Leonard with the No. 11 pick in the 2012 NBA draft? Okay, when that occurred, Skip Bayless of ESPN's First Take tweeted this out, “This is WAY too high for Meyers Leonard. Will never live up to 11th overall.” Of course I had to check in and see if Leonard was aware that he was called out by the easy-going Mr. Bayless. "I didn't know that,” Leonard said to CSNNW.com. “Interesting. Well, he's entitled to his own opinion. I'm just going to continue to work hard and be the best I can be. But, I didn't know he said that.” CSNNW.com

Meyers Leonard: At six years old, I lost my dad. Obviously a pretty tough time for my family and I. Grew up with my mom and my brother and I, and not a lot of money sometimes. Some hardship. It was tough but it also made me grow into a young man at an earlier age, stepping in and being somewhat of a caretaker throughout my early years of my life and now especially being able to take care of my mom and my family.
