Back in the summers of 2005 and ’06, when he was an assistant coach with the Rockets, Tom Thibodeau traveled to China with center Yao Ming, using the offseason time to hone the skills of the team’s All-Star big man. Yao’s primary commitment at the time, though, was to the Chinese national team, and so Thibodeau would work with Yao individually around his other commitments. But the experience registered with Thibodeau, now head coach of the Bulls. “I had the opportunity when Yao was playing for the Chinese national team, to watch how he participated and to watch their practices,” he said. “I learned a lot from that.” Sporting News

“I was flattered that I was even considered,” Thibodeau said. “It wasn’t something I expected. Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski called and I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn. I am excited to be here. Any time you have the opportunity to be around great coaches and great players, you have to take it. And these are your opponents, I think you learn a lot from them, too. I followed Team USA from afar and was very curious to see what the inner workings are here.” Sporting News

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant and Minnesota Timberwolves center Kevin Love say Wednesday they will be returning to play for Team USA. The two NBA stars were on hand for the national team's minicamp practice, and made the announcement in an impromptu news conference alongside team managing director Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Durant said he made the commitment to Krzyzewski late Tuesday night, while Love officially made his announcement during the news conference. ESPN.com

Turns out Krzyzewski wasn't sure how much coaching he wanted to do -- of any kind -- after the long grind in London that secured a second straight gold medal for Team USA only after a narrow, nervy escape against Spain in the championship game. "A year or so ago, I was thinking a little bit about [retirement]," Krzyzewski revealed this week. "I'm 66. I wasn't sure how long I was going to coach. "But I'm not thinking about that at all any more and haven't been for a while. I'm sure I'm gonna coach for a while, and through the Olympics by far." ESPN.com

"You shouldn't be a retired coach coaching the national team," Krzyzewski said, explaining why he felt so strongly that he couldn't have consented to stay on with Team USA unless he knew he was still in charge at Duke. "You have to be on the firing line. ... You can't shortchange -- as a player or a coach -- the national team. I know that I won't and I know the guys that we pick won't." ESPN.com

Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski invited former Olympic coach John Thompson to address the minicamp participants after practice. The two matched wits twice in Duke-Georgetown battles. "He and I are great, great friends," Krzyzewski said. "He's one of the legendary figures, not just in basketball but in our country. When you think of the progress we've made with race relations, you have to consider John as one of the key people in that regard. All of those guys know who he is. If you could've seen their eyes fixated on him, it was like, 'Whoa.' It was good of John to do that." Chicago Tribune

Nate McMillan won't re-join Mike Krzyzewski's USA Basketball coaching staff, the former Portland Trail Blazers coach told Yahoo! Sports. Krzyzewski announced Thursday that he will remain as Team USA's head coach through 2016. McMillan was a member of Krzyzewski's staff as an assistant coach from 2006-12. "It was a great experience with Coach K," McMillan said. "Jerry Colangelo did a great job bringing the staff together. They're in a great position and I'm excited about their future. They have to continue to build on what they started. It would be good for someone to experience it. I'm grateful for my six and a half years." Yahoo! Sports
