"For a crash like that, I was lucky," he said. "It's very scary. You don't know if you're going to live or die. "It makes you look at life differently, not take things for granted. It makes you think about a lot of things. You try to appreciate life more." Vucevic and his father were returning from a youth basketball camp in the mountain resort town of Kolasin in Montenegro, heading to their home in the coastal city of Bar, as the train suddenly sped uncontrollably down the tracks. Court records stated later that the brakes had failed. Orlando Sentinel

The Orlando Magic remain without a pair of starters for its matchup with the Chicago Bulls. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn says guard Arron Afflalo is out for the third straight game with a strained right foot, and center Nik Vucevic is missing his fifth straight game on Wednesday recovering from a concussion. Vaughn says Vucevic is still going through the NBA concussion protocol and Afflalo is feeling better, but is still not ready to play. Oklahoman

The Orlando Magic have decided to send Nik Vucevic home to Central Florida as he recovers from a concussion, a team official said Wednesday night. The Magic have three games remaining on their five-game road trip, and there was no realistic chance Vucevic would’ve completed the NBA’s concussion protocol by the time the road trip ends on Jan. 13. The Orlando Magic convened at the Portland Trail Blazers' arena on Tuesday afternoon, but one of their most crucial players was conspicuously absent. Nik Vucevic remained at the team hotel to rest and limit his exposure to light after he suffered a concussion Monday night on a gruesome landing on Staples Center's hardwood court. Vucevic's return to game action will be governed by the NBA's concussion protocol, which mandates that concussed players must pass a series of neurological and physical tests before a physician clears them to play again. And, in fact, Vucevic might play when the Orlando Magic face the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at Quicken Loans Arena. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn and Vucevic said moments ago that Vucevic’s availability to play will be determined closer to tipoff. “At first, I thought it would be a pretty bad one, the way it was hurting,” Vucevic said. “But, then, I guess all the treatment we did, all the icing and stuff — I spent New Year’s icing it — it was worth it. When I woke up in the morning, I was kind of hesitant to step on it to see how it feels, but it felt pretty good. It was painful, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Orlando Sentinel

Magic center Nikola Vucevic said that he learned early on that when Nelson speaks in the locker room that he should be listening. Vucevic, 23, said that Nelson reached out to him not long after he joined the Magic and has always been there to help him. ``It means a lot having a guy like Jameer around here because he’s a great veteran and a great leader,’’ said Vucevic, who hopes to play on Sunday after missing the past two games with a sprained ankle. ``We have a very good communication on and off the floor and he helps me out a lot. When I don’t know something, I go ask Jameer. He’s been great to me and I really like playing with him.’’ NBA.com

Vucevic’s had another monster performance last week, when he scored 30 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to help the Magic take a surprising win over the Los Angeles Clippers. After that game, Vucevic told HOOPSWORLD he credits Magic point guard Jameer Nelson with much of his success. “It’s a lot easier because you know I just, all I really got to do is set a good screen and roll and he is always able to find me in good spots where I just got to turn around and finish,” said Vucevic. “Jameer is a great point guard, great passer, and makes the game easier not only for me, but for everybody.” HoopsWorld

The Orlando Magic on Saturday will exercise their 2014-15 team options on Maurice Harkless, Tobias Harris, Andrew Nicholson and Nik Vucevic, the Orlando Sentinel has learned. Under NBA rules regarding former first-round draft picks, a team has until Oct. 31 before a player’s second season to pick up its third-year option. A team also has until Oct. 31 before a player’s third season to exercise its fourth-year option. Orlando Sentinel

Magic officials say they're pleased with Vucevic's strides in the weight room. They wanted him to work on his lateral quickness, explosiveness and upper-body strength, and Vaughn said Wednesday that Vucevic has improved. Team officials also want Vucevic to play more aggressively and with more confidence. He is polite and soft-spoken off the court. But it often helps to play with a mean streak on the court, especially in the rough-and-tumble world of NBA big men. "I think Nik ended last season with a high degree of confidence," Magic General Manager Rob Hennigan said. "I think we're looking for him to continue to play confidently and to continue to build on the type of aggression and physicality that he plays with on a nightly basis." Orlando Sentinel
