Former Soviet basketball great and Olympic gold medalist Sergei Belov has died at 69. His death was announced by CSKA Moscow, the team he played with for 13 seasons. The club said Belov died Thursday in the Ural Mountains city of Perm. It didn't give a cause. Belov helped the Soviets to the gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, scoring 20 points in the famous 51-50 win over the United States in the final. The shooting guard also won three Olympic bronze medals and two FIBA world championship titles. USA Today Sports

Dennis Rodman says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has asked him to train his players to compete in the 2016 Olympics. Days after returning from his second trip to visit Kim Jong Un — in which he said he became the first foreigner to hold the leader’s newborn daughter — Rodman announced plans Monday to stage two exhibition games in North Korea in January. And Rodman, who joked that he hadn’t drawn such a crowd in New York since he wore a wedding dress to a book signing, was adamant that this venture was serious — “groundbreaking,” in Rodman’s words. “People think this is a gimmick. I would love to make this a gimmick ... but it’s not about the money,” he said. Chicago Sun-Times

Dirk Nowitzki might not be done with international basketball, even at the age of 36. Germany coach Frank Menz said Monday that the Dallas Mavericks forward would consider a return to FIBA competition if the national team looks capable of making a run at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Nowitzki last played for Germany at the 2011 EuroBasket in Lithuania. But Nowitzki was fatigued after the Mavericks' run to the NBA title, and the Germans failed to reach the quarterfinals, ending hopes of reaching last summer's Olympics in London. ESPN.com

Chris Paul has changed his mind and is leaning toward playing in the 2016 Olympics. The Los Angeles Clippers point guard, who was on the 2008 and 2012 gold medal teams, said he was leaning heavily toward bypassing the 2016 Games -- until Duke's Mike Krzyzewski announced he was returning to coach the team. Although his stay in Dallas was brief and unpleasant for Mavericks fans, that doesn’t necessarily mean Lamar Odom won’t be able to represent the United States this summer in London. According to USA Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, Odom is still part of the USA basketball pool of players that could play in this summer’s Olympic Games. Dallas Morning News

Mike Krzyzewski loves Derrick Rose. He would have loved coaching him even more this summer. "I love Derrick," Krzyzewski said Monday at the Team USA media summit. "He helped us win a world championship in Istanbul. He's our starting point guard. I thought he grew a lot from that experience. He's somebody in the future I know will be a point guard for our Olympic team". Chicago Tribune
