Serena Winters: Yesterday, Magic said he had a long conversation w/ Pau Gasol before he ultimately made his decision to continue career in Chicago. Magic Johnson: "He (Pau) was really hurt by the way he was treated." Specifically how he was mis-used last year, "He could never get over that." Twitter

Whether Derrick Rose will make Team USA no longer is in question. Considering the damage he has inflicted on opposing guards during the first three days of tryouts, it’s more about when it will be made official. Rose all but did on Wednesday. Well, kind of. In discussing new Bulls teammate Pau Gasol, who was signed as a free agent earlier in the month, Rose mistakenly said, “I talked to [Gasol] before he signed and he said when we get to Spain [for next month’s FIBA Cup] that we’ll probably get something to eat, so I’ll probably catch up with him, get dinner or something.’’ Call it Rose already knowing something or just having flat-out confidence in his ability. Meanwhile, Magic Johnson also said he tried to convince Carmelo Anthony to leave the New York Knicks in an hourlong phone conversation. Johnson noted that he spoke at length with Pau Gasol, who chose to leave for the Chicago Bulls instead of staying with the Lakers. "We had a great conversation but I think the way he was treated last season, kind of hurt him," said Johnson. "Here's a guy 18 [points] and 10 [rebounds], shooting over 50% and you want to bench him? You want to mess with this guy? He could never get over that." Los Angeles Times

Four players – three of them future Hall of Famers – took pay cuts of a staggering eight figures this offseason. Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol and Paul Pierce all took salary slashes of more than $10 million to extend their careers with contending teams. They head the list of the top 10 individual pay cuts this summer. Our list uses exact salary figures from last season. In some cases, this season’s figures are averages of multi-year deals received by players. For example, Ben Gordon signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Orlando Magic. But before he could totally turn the page, Gasol reflected on what it was like to bid farewell to one certain former Lakers teammate: Kobe Bryant. "It was difficult," Gasol told reporters when asked about informing Bryant of his decision to sign with the Bulls. "We have a close friendship. We've been through a lot together, and I'm sure I will miss him. But we talked to each other and our relationship goes beyond basketball and we'll always have a friendship. "It was difficult to talk to him, but he was very supportive and he understood. He just said I had to do what was best for me and what felt right for me and he was going to support me no matter what. That's what friends and brothers do, and that's what we are." ESPN.com
