Before Love had his agent push the Wolves for a trade in April, Rubio never did have a heart-to-heart with him about a future together. On a trip to Los Angeles after the T'wolves season ended, Rubio considered talking to Love there, but never bothered. What was the point anymore? "If he wanted to leave, there's no reason to talk to him about it," Rubio told Yahoo. "I really liked playing with him, but I'll play with the players who want to be there. Kevin wants to win. That's normal. He's been there six years without the playoffs. I understand. If I was in the same situation – being one of the best players in the league – and not being able to be in the playoffs, I'd have a lot of frustration, too. Yahoo! Sports

So Minnesota president and coach Flip Saunders has to make a decision on his willingness to extend Rubio's rookie contract with a deal that corresponds with a belief the T'wolves see him as franchise cornerstone. Saunders has had discussions with Rubio's agent Dan Fegan and they'll talk more between now and the Oct. 31 deadline. Without an extension, Rubio can be a restricted free agent next summer. Yahoo! The last couple years there have been a lot of questions. It is hard – even if the team is good – the media always talks about it. You don't want to think about it, but everyone is always talking about your main guy this way. And it becomes harder to be focused. Right now, we have to play with the players we have." Yahoo! The U.S. and Spain, who have met in the last two Olympic gold-medal games, have been the class of the Basketball World Cup. A matchup that was an expectation coming into the tournament seems closer to a guarantee when watching them now. Both went 5-0 and were hardly challenged in group play, Spain powering past what was considered a difficult pool and the U.S. sweeping through the weakest. They look so good that it's hard to envision anyone beating one of them except the other. "They are playing well, but we can't think about games that could come in the future," Spain guard Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves said. "We have to concentrate on the game at hand." Kahn and Taylor further inflamed the relationship when they gave Love only a four-year extension, reserving the team's single five-year "designated player" contract for Ricky Rubio. That decision is haunting the Timberwolves today. If Love had been granted the longer deal, he would have been locked up through 2017, with an opt-out in 2016, and no means to force a trade this summer. Until the NBA, Love had known nothing but success, leading his high school team to the Oregon state title game three times, winning the championship his junior year. His AAU team, co-anchored by Brandon Jennings, once went 47-0. In his one season at UCLA, Love powered the Bruins to a conference championship and a Final Four appearance. "He's won his whole life," the confidant said. "Until he got to Minnesota." Bleacher Report

Next year's starting five will likely be Rubio-Martin-Wiggins-Young-Pekovic. Can we say this is Rubio's moment? Darren Wolfson: Rubio is on notice. The Wolves are trying to sign him to an extension, and so far his agent, Dan Fegan, is balking at the idea of a 4-year, $43 million deal. That's plenty for a player of Rubio's caliber. It's a lot more than Atlanta point guard Jeff Teague makes -- maybe a better player -- and is what Golden State All-Star guard Stephen Curry makes. But Fegan is seeking the 5-year max. That's not happening. The situation is pointing toward Rubio being a restricted free agent next summer. In other words, the 2014-2015 season is huge for Rubio. He should improve his shooting under Flip and we know he has unbelievable athletes to cut to the hoop and catch alley-oop passes. Sportando

Rubio is now the new face of franchise. A face of franchise requests a contract as face of franchise. In your opinion which is Rubio's value at this time? Can Saunders consider the idea to let him free at the end of the season and wait for offers to match? Darren Wolfson: Wiggins will be the face of the franchise, in my opinion. Answered some of this above. But his value at the time is what only the Wolves are willing to pay him: 4-years, $43 million. His value next summer will be what the league will pay him and then the Wolves will decide if they want to match the offer. And yes, I think at the moment the Wolves are plenty fine with letting another team set the market next summer. Sportando
