A few NBA teams have placed interest in Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington, but the 24-year-old sharpshooter has been made largely unavailable from trade inquiries as a core part of the franchise’s long-term plans, league sources told RealGM. Since signing a contract with the 76ers on Nov. 15, Covington has arguably been the team’s most consistently productive player, with a skill set that’s able to translate throughout the league’s 30 teams. Covington isn’t much of a video game player, but when Sixers fans discovered last week that his three-point rating in NBA2k15 was an appalling 49 out or 99, he heard about it on Twitter. It’s not uncommon for the game to take a “wait and see” approach with younger, less experience players, even those with a proven track record in one area, like Covington with his three-point shooting. But 49, on par with most jump shot-averse big men, seemed excessively low. The developers of the game obviously agreed, bumping him all the way up to 87 in that category this week, a mark that slots him amongst the top perimeter shooters in the game. “I saw before that it was 40-something and saw someone comment [on Twitter] like, ‘Really?’ But I guess it changed,” he said, laughing. “It’s a blessing [having people] give recognition, even in a video game.” NBA.com

The Philadelphia 76ers announced today the team has signed free agent forward Robert Covington. Covington, who was the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Development League Draft by the Grand Rapids Drive, is the fifth GATORADE Call-Up of the 2014-15 D-League season. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. NBA.com

Covington was eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft following a standout four-year career at Tennessee State. He earned Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors as a senior and a sophomore and First Team distinction as a junior. In a related move, the Sixers waived Chris Johnson. NBA.com

Chris Johnson was the 76er, who received the pink slip to make room for Robert Covington. The team will sign Covington, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward on Saturday. He could join the team as early as that day and will be available to play for the Sixers (0-9) on Monday at the San Antonio Spurs. They had to waive Johnson to make room on the 15-man roster. According to a league source, the Sixers have also been in contact with former Syracuse powe forward Arinze Onuaku. However, the source added that he didn't know how serious those discussions were. The 6-9, 275-pounder played a total of five games last season with the New Orleans Pelicans and Cleveland Cavaliers. Covington was called up from the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Development League team. Philadelphia Inquirer
