Last year, the Red Claws did not expect to keep point guard Shelvin Mack for long and, sure enough, the Atlanta Hawks reached out to him (and Mack is still with Atlanta). This year the player to watch may be 6-foot-8 forward Romero Osby – as in, watch him soon because who knows when an NBA team will scoop him up. “He is very close,” Red Claws Coach Mike Taylor said. “If there is a need by an NBA team, I believe he’ll be right on their radar.” Press-Herald

The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, today announced the team has acquired rookie Romero Osby from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in exchange for the rights to Terrance Henry, 10th overall pick in this year’s D-League Draft, and the rights to Xavier Silas. Osby, who was selected by the Orlando Magic in the 2nd round (51st overall) of the 2013 NBA Draft, is coming off his senior season at the University of Oklahoma, where the 6-8 forward averaged 16.0 points (shooting .525 from the field and .529 from three-point range), 7.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while being named the University of Oklahoma’s Men’s Basketball team MVP and earning All-Big 12 1st Team honors. With the Boston Celtics as the leading candidate to acquire his rights, Romero Osby is finalizing a deal to sign in the NBA D-League, league sources told RealGM. Osby was a final cut of the Orlando Magic, who selected the rugged, active forward with the No. 51 pick in the NBA draft. Since Osby’s release in training camp, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets have also expressed interest in him, sources said. Fort Wayne currently owns rights to Osby, but the Celtics’ affiliate – the Maine Red Claws – are working to acquire the 23-year-old. The Celtics have one roster spot open and could call up Osby at a point that is flexible on the team’s salary situation. RealGM

The Orlando Magic will soon lose the rights to Romero Osby, their second-round pick from the 2013 NBA Draft, unless they offer him the required tender for second-round picks. According to Larry Coon's NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement FAQ page, this tender "is a one-year contract offer teams must submit to retain their rights to the player." Second-round picks must sign their tenders by September 6th, Coon says, in order to avoid becoming free agents. Orlandoinstripedpost.com

The Magic are working on a buyout agreement with Hedo Turkoglu, plan on giving second-round pick Romero Osby a chance to make the team and likely will invite as many as four more players to their training camp, according to a source close to the club. As expected, Turkoglu and the team have been trying to arrange a buyout with the 13-year veteran small forward. He does not figure into the team's rebuilding plans at age 34. Only half of his $12 million salary for next season — the last year of his contract — is guaranteed. Orlando Sentinel
