After missing 17 games with a knee injury, Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson is expected to make his return at some point on their upcoming crucial three-game road trip that begins Wednesday night against the Lakers at the Staples Center. Coach Monty Williams said Anderson has been working out a lot lately and said it looks he will be ready to play soon. ''I'm definitely going to be back on this road trip,'' Anderson said after Monday's practice. ''That's my full intention.'' New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Pelicans will look for a small forward, but they’re not trading Ryan Anderson for some run-of-the-mill wing player — especially with Quincy Pondexter giving them solid minutes. The Clips and Heat will try to turn nothing into something. The Hawks have freaking $4.9 million in cap room, which seems unfair. They could sign a free agent or absorb extra salary in a lopsided trade. Grantland

One month ago, Sports Illustrated published a long feature on Anderson and the suicide of his girlfriend, Gia Allemand, who starred in “The Bachelor” and “Bachelor Pad.” She killed herself after a fight with Anderson one month before training camp opened last season. Smith was a central part of the story, rushing to Anderson’s house that night to console him and being part of his recovery from the tragedy. Smith was depicted as his best friend on the Pelicans. Anderson, a power forward, has become an advocate for suicide awareness. “I still have not read [the article],’’ Smith said before the Knicks’ 104-93 loss to the Pelicans Tuesday night. “It’s still very fresh in my mind. I told him that [Monday] night. He was surprised. Some day down the line I’ll read it. But I’m glad they did very good job of writing it from what I heard. Ryan was very happy about it. I think it helped him in the process of getting closure.’’ New York Post
