According to sources with knowledge of the person calling the shots in Baskonia, Gomes, who registered three DNPs in the Spanish ACB League, was ordered to sit out in favor of president’s Josean Querejeta underachieving signing Kim Tillie, who agreed to join Vitoria months before Crespi was hired. Baskonia, in case you wondered, are seed No. 15 with a poor 1-3 record. Whispers around Baskonia indicate that Querejeta pulls the strings, urging his coaching staff to provide extensive game-time for “his guys on multi-year contracts,” said the source — after his previous grossly overpaid signings Devon Van Oostrum, Walter Hodge and Adam Hanga were given significant checks to play for other squads this summer. Gomes last played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2011-12. He says he has worked out for the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs, but is still weighing his options for the upcoming season. He says he is using this summer to improve his off-the-dribble shooting. "I was never a superstar kind of guy, I was more of fill-in guy, but I've always been consistent," he said. "My last year playing with Los Angeles wasn't my best year, it was probably my worst in the NBA. So if I go to a team like [the Thunder or Spurs] I know what my roll is already. I'll come in and try to fill any void they have there." Hartford Courant

Utah State basketball player Danny Berger is recovering after collapsing at practice Wednesday and going into cardiac arrest. Berger has been slowly upgraded over the last two days and is now listed as in “fair” condition. However, if it weren’t for current German basketball player Ryan Gomes, Berger might not be here. Gomes, a New England native and alumnus of Providence College, played two seasons for the Celtics, from 2005 to 2007. His NBA career continued for five more years with the Timberwolves and Clippers. Gomes has also partnered with a charity called Hoops for Heart Health, which is where Berger comes in. NESN.com

Gomes once saw a teammate pass away during a game, an event that may have been prevented had a defibrillator been available. Since then, Gomes and the charity have been donating defibrillators to teams and recreational centers around the country. In fact, the defibrillator that helped save Berger’s life was one directly donated by Gomes, according to USUStats.com The Hoops for Heart Health website contains a message from Gomes that reads in part: “If we can save just one life, it makes all of our efforts worthwhile.” NESN.com
