In five years working under Flip Saunders and Randy Wittman, Cassell was able to see the Wizards rise from league-wide laughingstock to a legitimate playoff contender. Wall and Beal both credited Cassell for helping them improve. Wall ranks second in the league assists and third in steals and Beal has been slowly recovering from a left wrist injury that kept him out the first nine games. “It was great,” Cassell said of working with Wall and Beal. “I don’t think John had a great playoffs last year. He was solid. He was solid. Like I always tell him, ‘John, you’re the best decoy we can have.’ It’s just not him scoring the ball, it’s all the other intangible things John Wall brings to the basketball court that’s going to make him one of the best guards in this league.” Washington Post

David Aldridge: Was Washington your first choice? I heard all summer you wanted to go home to L.A., to the Clippers. Paul Pierce: Obviously, this is my first time in free agency. I really didn't know where I was going to end up. Truthfully, I thought I was going to end up back in Brooklyn, with Kevin [Garnett]. I told Kevin, if you're not going to retire, then I probably will come back. But when Brooklyn didn't give me an offer, it was like, I talked to him, and I kind of started looking at my options then. I thought I probably would end up with the Clippers with Doc [Rivers], but they wound up signing Spencer Hawes [and using the full mid-level exception] at the time. That's when Sam Cassell gave me a call, shortly after Trevor Ariza signed with Houston. That kind of happened so fast. He signed, and Sam called me, and [asked] what I thought. We both were in Vegas at the time, talking on the phone. Then met him for lunch. Then met him again for dinner. It took some convincing, because I never really thought about Washington. It just wasn't on my radar. But I started thinking about it, and everything he was telling me, based on what they did last year, the guys they have here, he talked about the culture, he talked about Coach [Randy Wittman], Ernie [Grunfeld, the GM], talked to him. Pierce chose the Wizards this offseason in free agency, only after discussions with then-Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell and former Wizards forward Al Harrington convinced him that this place was right to continue and possibly finish his Hall of Fame-bound career. "I asked them at first what the guys were like to work with, you know, Bradley and all these guys," Pierce told USA TODAY Sports. "I asked them about the culture, 'Are there good guys in the locker room?' And they kept on saying, 'You're really gonna like these guys. You're really gonna like these guys.' " USA Today Sports

Khem Birch doesn't pay much attention to what's said about him, turning pro after his junior season at UNLV. Assistant coach Sam Cassell, who is running the Wizards' summer league team that plays Saturday vs. the San Antonio Spurs, paid the highest compliment to the undrafted free agent. Cassell said if it were up to him, Birch would be part of the Wizards' 15-man roster to begin the regular season. "Oh really? That's cool," Birch said when told of Cassell 's comments. "A lot of people doubted me, thinking I shouldn't have left early. I know I was ready. Even if I don't make the team it shows that I still have a chance to make it in the league." CSNWashington.com

Everybody was complaining that the scoring was low, but what the hell you expect?" said Sam Cassell, a rookie guard for that Rockets team and now an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. "You had the two best defensive teams in basketball going at each other." Appointment television? More like disappointment television. Then, just as the series arrived at its tipping point, a white Ford Bronco cruised into America's living rooms and captivated the nation. "I couldn't believe it was happening to us," said David Stern, who had escorted Olajuwon and Ewing into the NBA with the first two No. 1 draft picks of his 30-year reign as commissioner. "It was just surreal." CBSSports.com
