The Los Angeles Clippers announced today that the team has added Sam Cassell, Lawrence Frank and Mike Woodson as assistant coaches to the staff of Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Doc Rivers. The trio joins current assistant coaches Armond Hill and Brendan O’Connor as well as assistant player skills coaches JP Clark and Dave Severns on the bench. “We have an impressive and experienced group of coaches who are excited to get to work,” Rivers said. “Mike and Lawrence have enjoyed tremendous success as head coaches and Sam is someone who I coached as a player and respected as an assistant with the Wizards. I am excited to continue to work with the entire staff as we prepare for the season.” NBA.com

The Clippers are also close to finalizing their coaching staff. Former New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson joined Rivers' coaching staff, which lost three assistant coaches this offseason, in July. He is expected to be joined by Sam Cassell, who was let out of his contract with the Washington Wizards last month, and Lawrence Frank, who is still under contract with the Brooklyn Nets. ESPN.com

Sam Cassell is leaving the Washington Wizards after five seasons to take an assistant coaching position with the Los Angeles Clippers, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed Saturday. Cassell joined the Wizards as a member of Flip Saunders’s staff in 2009, one year after winning a third championship in Boston with Doc Rivers, the current president and coach of the Clippers. Khem Birch doesn't pay much attention to what's said about him, turning pro after his junior season at UNLV. Assistant coach Sam Cassell, who is running the Wizards' summer league team that plays Saturday vs. the San Antonio Spurs, paid the highest compliment to the undrafted free agent. Cassell said if it were up to him, Birch would be part of the Wizards' 15-man roster to begin the regular season. "Oh really? That's cool," Birch said when told of Cassell 's comments. "A lot of people doubted me, thinking I shouldn't have left early. I know I was ready. Even if I don't make the team it shows that I still have a chance to make it in the league." CSNWashington.com

Everybody was complaining that the scoring was low, but what the hell you expect?" said Sam Cassell, a rookie guard for that Rockets team and now an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. "You had the two best defensive teams in basketball going at each other." Appointment television? More like disappointment television. Then, just as the series arrived at its tipping point, a white Ford Bronco cruised into America's living rooms and captivated the nation. "I couldn't believe it was happening to us," said David Stern, who had escorted Olajuwon and Ewing into the NBA with the first two No. 1 draft picks of his 30-year reign as commissioner. "It was just surreal." CBSSports.com

Sam Cassell has something in common with John Mayer -- they both bought expensive watches from the same guy ... a guy accused of selling FAKES ... and now the former NBA star tells TMZ Sports he's bringing in experts to see if he got ripped off. We broke the story ... Mayer is suing Charlie Sheen's BFF Robert Maron -- claiming he bought $5 million worth of Rolex watches from the guy ... some of which turned out NOT to be 100% authentic. Cassell tells TMZ Sports he also bought a watch from Maron -- "It's an A. Lange & Sohne. It cost me a nice piece of change." TMZ.com

And this week, at last, I got my chance. Seeing the Washington Wizards these days usually means, first and foremost, that you're there to check out the fast-blossoming Bradley Beal, but my mission was finding out how Cassell feels about the $15,000 fines this month dished out to Brooklyn's Andray Blatche and Milwaukee's Caron Butler. "Obscene gesture?" Cassell bellowed, shaking his head disapprovingly. ESPN.com

Otto Porter hit his first two shots of the Washington Wizards' Summer League opener against the Golden State Warriors ... and then hit one of his last 13, often disappearing from the offense in an ugly 56-52 loss. Afterwards, multiple people with the Wizards noted that they wanted to see him find ways to be more aggressive. "He's got to be more assertive. He's got to find some of his own offense sometimes on the court. I could run plays for him, get him shots. But if those don't work, now what?" Wizards summer league coach Sam Cassell said. "There are things he's got to do himself. He did it at Georgetown, and he can do it here." Bullets Forever

The ever-brash Cassell broke into the league more than a decade before Livingston and played extrovert to Livingston's introvert. They once shared the court in a game against Utah. Livingston took the ball out of bounds and nearly drew a five-second violation before signaling for a timeout. "I ripped into his ass," said Cassell, now an assistant with Washington. "He didn't speak to me for a couple of days because of the tone. I verbally went at him. I told him, 'I'm not going to be wide open with eight seconds left in a game. You've got to get the ball to me.' He took it personally. He didn't speak to me, but I didn't care. I've seen the change right there in him: getting guys in the right position, running the offense, not having to rely on me to bring the ball up when guys are on him. I just saw him start to take off from there." Grantland
