It is likely the Magic will promote one of their assistant coaches to interim head coach, but several league executives have speculated that former Magic player Scott Skiles could be a front-runner for the job. Skiles played five of his 10 NBA seasons with the Magic, enjoying the best years of his career there. ESPN.com

Scott Skiles. A guy who has coached three different NBA teams fits Saunders’ criteria: He’s an experienced head coach and a candidate who understands the point-guard position and can help develop Ricky Rubio. He’d also insist his teams play defense and is believed to have interviewed for the job. Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Sam: Actually, Phil and Skiles. I know it’s probably hard to believe with Skikes and his snarl. But Scott has a wicked, biting sense of humor that I enjoyed. His bosses don’t always. Phil used to love to bait people as well in his quirky way and rarely, if ever, was someone upset or not trying to break the tension with a joke, which was very difficult with the basically humorless Jerry Krause. Stan Albeck was enjoyable with a good sense of humor, but just around one season. Doug Collins was, as you can guess, pretty intense. Tim Floyd was pretty much working his good ol’ boy routine most of the time. Bill Cartwright was serious but easy to joke with. Vinny was relaxed and could take a joke, but not much for offering them. And Thibs, well he’s misunderstood. You can have a fun time with him, but he doesn’t like many to know that. NBA.com

And if the owners are looking for someone “exotic,” they could go with Boston-born David Blatt, who is currently head coach of the Israeli pro team Maccabi Tel Aviv, or Italy’s Ettore Messina, currently coaching CSKA in Moscow and considered one of the top coaches in Europe. “There are five or six ‘names’ like Lionel Hollins and George Karl and Alvin Gentry and Scott Skiles,” a league source said. “Then you look at the younger guys — and there aren’t a lot of them that are hot names right now.” Boston Globe

Looking at the hard-driving Thibodeau model, the Nets also have done background checks on Scott Skiles. But while he hasn't totally been taken off their radar, there is some fear that Skiles could clash with some of the veteran stars and have a short shelf life. ESPN.com
