In talking recently with industry insiders there is a reason that Durant is garnering this much attention, not only because he is one of the top players in basketball, but because Durant moves product. In 2013 the Durant brand at Nike generated more than $175 million in sales, up from $35 million in 2012. That’s the biggest gain from any of the top brands, especially at Nike. Brand Jordan, the top money earner is said to have generated $2.25 billion for Nike, up slightly from the $2 billion Brand Jordan generated in 2012. LeBron James’ brand generated $300 million in 2013, roughly unchanged from the $300 million generated in 2012. Making Durant’s almost 500% increase in sales remarkable given the brand names he is line with. Basketball Insiders

More than a year after his split from Reebok, Wall has become of the one of the faces of Adidas and said last week that he will have a signature shoe line, complete with a personal logo, released in October. During his time in Las Vegas, Wall got to break in his new sneakers and even put on some of his personal shorts and shirts after removing his Nike-produced USA Basketball gear. Washington Post

Wall signed a five-year, $25 million deal with Reebok before he was drafted by the Wizards, but that relationship came to an end in the third year. With Wall’s career stalled by injury and an unstable Wizards roster, the partnership with Reebok soured and he moved over to Adidas, which owns Reebok. The move took Wall from being the foundation of one brand into a situation where he had to prove his worth as a player to a company that already had a stable of established all-stars. Kevin Durant’s contract expires soon, and the organization with which he’s been for what seems like forever is under siege. Every competitor wants Durant’s services, most notably an upstart in his youthful stomping grounds. We’re talking about Nike, of course, which has produced seven versions of Durant’s signature shoe, but Durant’s Swoosh contract runs out this week, and Maryland-based Under Armour plans to come after Durant with gusto.
