Coach Doc Rivers said that two days ago Hawes came to the Clippers training facilty and worked with assistant Dave Severns for two hours. Just the two of them in an empty gym, practicing moves and jumpers. “There was no sign that he was going to play and yet he was in here acting like he was getting ready for a big game that he was going to play in,” Rivers said Saturday. “Then he comes in and performs, and to me that is the ultimate of professionalism.” In typical low-key fashion, Hawes didn’t make a big deal of his performance. “(The minutes) felt good,” he said after the game. “I am just trying to do as much as I can. I’m obviously not playing much but I stay ready knowing that my time will come eventually. Orange County Register

Is there anything Rivers can do to help Hawes 65 games into the season? “No, I just think he’s going to keep getting better,” Rivers said Friday morning, hours before the Clippers would play the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center. “He’s obviously not had the year we’d like, but it’s a long year. It still is a long year. “It doesn’t matter if it’s late in the year. I’ve seen guys have horrible regular seasons and then break out in the playoffs. You don’t know where it’s coming, but we still believe in him just like the other 20 teams that wanted to sign him in the league. It’s there and we have to get it out.” Los Angeles Times

Hawes’ skill set, Rivers said, was no different than what he thought it was when the Clippers signed the big man. "He's not making shots, if you just wanted to simplify it," Rivers said, "and we need him to." Los Angeles Times

The low point came early last week when Hawes went scoreless in consecutive games for the first time since March 2008 during his rookie season. "He has to play better to play more," Coach Doc Rivers said before the Clippers' 105-85 victory. "Minutes are earned, they're not just given out like cookies." Los Angeles Times

One of the most interesting parts regarded his comments on team chemistry. A small portion of David Aldridge’s column yesterday on NBA.com included a quote from “someone who knows the team well” that the teammates don’t like each other. Hawes talked on The Beast about how the team gets along. “Any team over the course of any season, there’s going to be stuff like that,” Hawes said. “But as far as I’m concerned, this team, off the court, on the court, gets along with each other as well as any that I’ve been a part of. I think there’s a lot of competitive guys, a lot of guys that just want to win. Sometimes you see that side of it, but you don’t see the everyday of how we get along with one another.” NBA.com
