The draft is June 27, more than a month away, but Hardaway already has a vision for his NBA career. “I envision having a long-term career, just like my father did,” he said, referring to Tim Hardaway Sr., who spent his first 12 seasons primarily with two teams: Golden State and Miami. “Not bouncing around that much. Not being a focal point, but being a piece of the team, a great team that wins a lot and wants to win. A guy that can come in, fill in and do whatever he can to help his team win.” Detroit Free Press

Tim Hardaway said he got the news Wednesday, that he had fallen short in the final vote for 2013 induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was disappointed, but hardly crushed. "Because I'm going to the Final Four anyway," the former Miami Heat guard joked Friday. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"I think you should never anticipate going in unless you're Michael Jordan or John Stockton or Karl Malone or someone like that," he said. "I'm happy for everyone who got in." Among those who formally will be named for induction Monday is Gary Payton, who will become the first former Heat player to be enshrined in Springfield. Payton helped the Heat win the 2006 NBA title, also spending the following season with the team. "I'm happy for Gary," Hardaway said. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Hardaway thinks Rose should sit out the entire 2012-13 season. "I'd just rather have him take his time, so he can be 100 percent, because he's like me, running and jumping," Hardaway told ESPNNewYork.com on Thursday. Hardaway pointed out that his injury was similar to Rose's, a freak, non-contact injury on a routine play. Hardaway was going up for a layup on March 3, 1993 against the Los Angeles Lakers when he tore his left ACL, and he missed the entire next season. Rose jump-stopped to shoot his trademark floater in the fourth quarter of Game 1 in the first round of last season's playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. ESPN.com

Hardaway remembers the months after the incident, thinking over and over again, 'Am I going to come back the way I want to come back?' But he overcame any doubt and stayed the course, relying on faith, confidence, his family and new eating habits, and he was able to return in 1994-95 and didn't have to deal with the ACL again -- even after his career. Hardaway said one thing is certain about Rose's recovery: It will make him a better shooter. "His jumpshot is going to come back a lot better than what it was," said Hardaway, who is now a community liaison and scout for the Miami Heat. "I'll tell you that. His jumpers and his free throw percentage is going to be up. I'm telling you. That's all you can do. You can't do anything else, but shoot around and just shoot free throws." ESPN.com

Mourning is the Heat's vice president of player development. Hardaway is the team's community and corporate liaison. The more accurate title for both former players is Riley Guys. "You've got to earn that respect from him," Hardaway said. "By earning that respect, you've got to show him that you're willing to work hard on and off the court, be prepared see things the way he sees it, and want to win and do whatever it takes to win, being prepared at all costs to do that. "The benefit is that you're in for life. You're in the organization for life. You're one of his guys. He's going to take care of you." ESPN.com

Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Jerry Krause and Vlade Divac top the list of new nominees with league ties for the Hall of Fame, NBA.com learned Friday. They are among a field that joins returning headliner Reggie Miller as candidates for the Class of 2012 in Springfield, Mass. The group is, in many ways, a continuation of the '11 class. Chris Mullin was inducted in August, and now friends and Run TMC namemates Richmond and Hardaway are hoping to follow. The strength of the Divac nomination is his international impact and contribution to the worldwide growth of the game, much the same way Arvydas Sabonis was elected, with his NBA contributions secondary on the resume. Tim Hardaway says not a day goes by that he doesn't think about what he said in a radio interview 4 1/2 years ago, when he infamously declared: "I hate gay people, so I let it be known. ... I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." The word "hate" particularly haunted him. "That's not me. That's not how I am," the former Warrior said by phone from Miami. "I'm a loving person." San Francisco Chronicle

Recently, though, he has been running plays that don't suggest coaching by a publicist. First, he appeared at an August rally in El Paso, Texas, for three city officials facing a recall vote because they want to continue providing benefits to same-sex partners of municipal employees, in spite of a ballot measure that abolished the practice. Then, in a follow-up interview with The Chronicle, Hardaway ducked one question. He chose wisely. It happened to be the most absurd question routinely asked about whether teams can welcome openly gay athletes. Hardaway initially planned his trip to El Paso, where he played college ball, around a charity golf tournament. Before he left, he called an old friend, the former assistant coach who recruited him out of Chicago, and asked to meet for drinks. San Francisco Chronicle

Basketball legend Tim Hardaway on Wednesday called on El Pasoans to grow up as he's had to when it comes to homosexuality. In town for a golf outing, Hardaway attended a press conference urging citizens to oppose recall efforts against Mayor John Cook and city Reps. Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega. The three are being recalled by a group of religious conservatives who are angry the three voted to restore health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees -- despite a ballot initiative in November that had abolished them. In asking citizens to oppose the recall, Hardaway said he was asking them not to do what he did. El Paso Times

Hardaway, a standout at the University of Texas at El Paso and a five-time NBA all-star, got into hot water in 2007 when he went on the radio and said, "You know, I hate gay people, so let it be known," according to the ESPN website. "I don't like gay people and I don't want to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the United States." Faced with a backlash from friends, family and the NBA, Hardaway quickly apologized for what he said. "I opened my eyes and went to counseling," he said Thursday. El Paso Times

They also say they harbor no hatred toward gays -- but that they think it's wrong to use tax dollars to support what they believe is an immoral lifestyle. Hardaway wasn't having it on Thursday as he stood, clad all in white, in Lower Tom Lea Park. "I would say grow up and catch up with the times," he said. "It's all around the world." El Paso Times

Tim Hardaway joined ESPN Radio Chicago to talk about his own experience of making homophobic comments that got him into all sorts of trouble back in 2007, his thoughts on how Noah has handled the media firestorm since then, whether he thinks the whole incident was a distraction for Noah on Tuesday night in the Bulls’ tough Game 4 loss, and how he’s still suffering the consequences of his offensive comments over four years later. On what his experience was like back in 2007 when he made a similarly derogatory and offensive comment that got him into trouble, and on the aftermath of Noah’s particular incident: “Well there’s a lot of stuff you can say about that. A lot of the stuff that’s said is wrong, a lot of stuff that’s said is right. I think Joakim Noah did the right thing — he apologized, he took the onus and went on ahead and corrected the whole situation like I did. That’s all you can do is correct the situation. You’re not trying to hurt anybody, you’re not trying to — how would I say it — offend anyone. But you’ve just got to take the right approach and hold your own self accountable for it and make everything right. And that’s all you can do.” Sports Radio Interviews
