HoopsHype Tyronn Lue rumors

Apart from James' face-to-face meeting with Allen, several other members of the Cavs have kept in contact with the shooting guard this season -- James Jones and Mike Miller, who were also Allen's teammates in Miami, as well as associate head coach Tyronn Lue, who was an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics when Allen played there. Blatt delegated to Lue the authority to originate the call for timeouts when the staff deemed necessary. Of course, an assistant coach cannot call a timeout in the NBA. The suggestion Lue has been disloyal and undermining can be puncturing to a young coach's career, and Blatt had one word to describe the assertion: "Horse[bleep]." "Just like Doc [Rivers] gave the defense to Tom Thibodeau [in Boston], I did the same thing with Ty Lue when I brought him in," Blatt told Yahoo Sports. Yahoo! Sports

The Cavs' associate head coach, Lue, had been a finalist for the head coaching job before the Cavs hired Blatt. And it was with Blatt's full support that the Cavs subsequently went out and made Lue the highest-paid assistant in the NBA -- luring him away from Doc Rivers' bench in Los Angeles with money and title. Blatt was completely unthreatened by Lue, according to a league source, and didn't care what title the Cavs had to give Lue to get him to come aboard. "Just get him here," he'd said. CBSSports.com

Blatt has clearly been stung by the criticisms and some of the reports. The part about Tyronn Lue calling timeouts from the bench really struck a nerve, since Blatt ripped it as “nonsense” Thursday morning and alluded to it again after the game. Akron Beacon Journal

Lue's agent of record is longtime coaching agent Lonnie Cooper, but insiders in the coaching business believe it's only a matter of time before he reunites with the agent who represented him as a player, Andy Miller. Incidentally, Miller is known in league circles to represent another Cavs assistant, former Bucks coach Larry Drew. (Player agents are not permitted under National Basketball Association by-laws to represent coaches or management, but that hasn't stopped nearly all the top agencies from doing it in some form or another -- while the union continues to turn a blind eye.) Blatt picked his coaching staff, but he and his assistants are also getting to know each other. He does not have a longtime confidante on his staff. Though Blatt told news reporters Thursday the coaching staff is fine, it's fact that lead assistant Tyronn Lue interviewed for the job Blatt has. USA Today Sports

One current NBA head coach said he’s never heard of an assistant calling for a timeout. “And if one of my guys did it," he said, "I’d kill him." Akron Beacon Journal

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt took offense to an ESPN report stating that his assistant, Tyronn Lue, has been calling timeouts behind his back. "That's a lot of nonsense and I think it's kind of cheap, to be honest with you," Blatt said before his team took the floor for shootaround on the campus of UCLA. Cleveland Plain Dealer

They see players appearing to run different plays than the bench calls, see assistant coach Tyronn Lue calling timeouts literally behind Blatt's back during games, and hear Cavs players openly talking about coaching issues with opposing players and personnel. Not once, not twice, but frequently over the past several months. For weeks now, the small talk when league personnel run into each other at college games, airports or pregame meals has frequently started with: "What the hell is going on in Cleveland?" ESPN.com
