HoopsHype Tyrus Thomas rumors

Thomas was an odd bird, no doubt. He seemed flighty and Silas became so exasperated with him that they had a brush-up at the end of Silas’ final season as head coach. (That did Paul no favors, by the way, in his case to get an extension to continue coaching the Bobcats). Things went south between Thomas and Dunlap, and I’m sure Thomas contributed to that breakdown. But still: I’m inclined to think players get too much slack and coaches get too much blame, but I have to say Thomas was treated poorly. Remember when they told him he wasn’t welcome to travel with the team on a West Coast trip? That was just demoralizing. And mean. Charlotte Observer

Beat writers show up way early for games. I’d walk into arenas around 4 p.m. for a 7 p.m. tip-off and often Tyrus was either just in front of me or just behind me at the media/player entrance. I’d be mulling around, looking for information, and there would be Thomas running drills before any of his teammates were in the building. He was trying to do the right thing. Charlotte Observer

Free agent forward Al Jefferson has agreed to sign with the Charlotte Bobcats on a three-year, $40.5 million deal, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The deal has a player option in the third season, and the Bobcats will have to use their amnesty clause on forward Tyrus Thomas in order to make the deal work. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal can't be formalized until the free agency moratorium lifts on July 10. USA Today Sports

Charlotte Bobcats power forward Tyrus Thomas was told not to accompany the team on their four-game West Coast trip by team management. Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said Monday the front office felt Thomas’s time was better spent in Charlotte, doing some physical rehabilitation and individual on-court work, rather than be on the road with his team. This year it was Gerald Henderson and rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, with the injured Tyrus Thomas throwing Jordan entry passes. Everyone left smiling, and maybe a little more savvy about basketball, too. “He’s the best ever to play and he’s still got that competitive nature. He always feels he can help you,’’ said team captain Henderson. “We played one-one-one. That’s always fun. He wants to win.’’ Charlotte Observer

Charlotte Bobcats power forward Tyrus Thomas is expected to miss two months after a magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tear of the plantaris muscle in his left leg. Thomas hobbled out of Saturday’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Monday’s MRI revealed the muscle tear near his calf. He also has a second-degree strain of the calf itself. The injury does not require surgery, but has a relatively long recovery period. Charlotte Observer

So he’s back with a new coach in Mike Dunlap, a stronger body (about 20 pounds of added muscle), and a fresh perspective. “I’m at a point in my career where it feels like ‘Groundhog Day,’ ’’ Thomas said of his seventh NBA training camp, starting Tuesday morning at UNC Asheville. “I thought last year could be the season that solidified me, but it was actually my worst. So the last few months have been about getting back to where I know I can be.’’ Where’s that? “A good player on a winning team,” Thomas said. “And I think we have that capability, particularly with the attitude of the coaches. I feel good about what is coming up.” Charlotte Observer

“I was hospitalized the week before camp with stomach ulcers,’’ Thomas said. “Lost 20 pounds and never really gained it back’’ until after the season. Thomas didn’t have the strength to play power forward effectively, so Silas tried him at small forward. It was awful, with him shooting a career-low 36.7 percent from the field. The friction between player and coach boiled over late last season when Silas physically lashed out at Thomas in a postgame locker room. Charlotte Observer

The Charlotte Bobcats would love to get out of the Tyrus Thomas business. To say it has gone bad in Charlotte between the team and the player is an understatement. HoopsWorld

Sources close to the process say the team hopes new head Coach Mike Dunlap can reach Tyrus in a way that Paul Silas couldn’t, but the truth of the matter is that Tyrus is not in the long-term plan. If the Bobcats can find anyone who’d take him, they’d trade Tyrus tomorrow. HoopsWorld
