HoopsHype Wayne Ellington rumors

June 25, 2014 Updates

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks, who immediately made reacquiring Chandler one of their priorities after their first-round playoff exit against San Antonio, soon will complete a trade with the Knicks that they will clinch by agreeing to take back the contract of New York's out-of-favor guard, Raymond Felton, as well. The trade is expected to cost Dallas two starters -- point guard Jose Calderon and center Samuel Dalembert -- along with prized young point guard Shane Larkin, reserve guard Wayne Ellington and future second-round draft compensation. The Cavaliers chose not to extend Wayne Ellington a qualifying offer by this weekend's deadline, a league source told the Beacon Journal, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent. But the team remains open to re-signing him. Akron Beacon Journal

The Cavs’ most prominent free agents are guards Wayne Ellington and Shaun Livingston and center Marreese Speights. The Cavs would like to sign Ellington. That means presenting him a qualifying offer of $3 million. It’s not as easy with Speights. It appears as if they hope he opts out of his deal. He might not fit their culture. Livingston emerged as a top-notch backup point — not quite as good as Golden State’s Jarrett Jack — but still a quality guard, nonetheless. He’ll likely ask for $3 million or $4 million, and settle for something like $2 million or $2.5 million, a source said. Morning Journal

The Cavs will offer Wayne Ellington (a restricted free agent) some type of contract for next season. Ellington is averaging 10.4 points and shooting .437 (.370 on 3-pointers) in 23 minutes per game for the Cavs. They also will be pleased if Mo Speights accepts his player option of $4.5 million for next season. Speights also could pass, and become an unrestricted free agent. The Cavs will see what kind of offers he attracts on the open market. Cleveland Plain Dealer
