One of Loyer's bigger challenges internally was keeping point guard Brandon Jennings engaged after Cheeks was fired. Jennings regarded Cheeks as a father figure and as he failed to adapt after the change, Loyer found himself turning more to backup Will Bynum, one of several Pistons who later ended the season injured. The Pistons have perfected the blueprint for insurrection. Some players privately pouted while others openly pounced on Cheeks. When backup point guard Will Bynum unabashedly got in Cheeks’ face at Orlando last week, it was only a matter of time before the Pistons served up another head coaching sacrifice under the guise of demanding better performance. Cheeks also went with Chauncey Billups as backup point guard in place of Will Bynum, which whom he had a heated discussion during Wednesday's loss at Orlando. Billups hadn't played since Jan. 10. Cheeks said Bynum's benching was not punitive. "Nah, I just wanted to play Chauncey tonight," he said. Booth Newspapers

Will Bynum is expected to undergo an MRI on his re-aggravated hamstring. Bynum missed five games, returned for two games, then was expected to miss Friday’s game against the Lakers. Bynum saw that Clara Kirk, founder of the West Englewood United Organization, was behind on the bill and stepped up, without provocation, without intending to be acknowledged publically. The Chicago native, who grew up in one of the roughest parts of the city, knows the statistics like he knows his own. “(There are) 116,000 homeless people in Chicago,” Bynum said, “and 56 percent of them are women. These women aren’t homeless because they don’t have a job, but they’ve been in domestically-abusive relationships and don’t have anywhere to go.” Detroit News

Will Bynum: There's a lot of new faces on the team. I really like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. He has the potential to become a great defender. He has a high basketball IQ and he plays basketball the right way. Chauncey said he was like a Tony Allen/Bruce Bowen type of energetic defender. Everybody was very competitive during the preseason: myself, Brandon Jennings, Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Charlie Villanueva... Everybody! HoopsHype

"I didn't know it was going to be like this," said Bynum, who limped into the locker room long after all of his teammates had left the training room. "But it's an opportunity. It's always an opportunity. I have to be ready for whatever. "I'm definitely not 100 percent. I'm not close to 100 percent. I kind of battled through it. I was going to play anyway. I didn't plan on playing that many minutes." Bynum played all but 93 seconds and scored 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line. He also had six assists and four rebounds. Booth Newspapers
