In an interview Sunday with Yahoo Sports, Rose — who missed all but 10 games last season with a torn meniscus in his right knee — indicated he might not try out for the U.S. team that will compete this summer in the Basketball World Cup in Spain. The tournament begins Aug. 30. That was news to the Bulls. ‘‘In terms of if he’s ready to go, he’s going,’’ Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. ‘‘He wants to go. That’s what he’s told me; that’s what he’s told USA Basketball. But it’s a step-by-step process. He’s coming along fine. The next step is to participate in summer league. If that goes well, he goes to USA [camp]. And if that goes well, he’ll play in those games. Chicago Sun-Times

‘‘You don’t know the context in which it was said. From what we’re seeing, he’s making good, steady progress. He looks great, and that’s all he can go by.’’ General manager Gar Forman said he hadn’t talked with Rose about the latest questions regarding his participation in Team USA’s camp, but he reiterated that ‘‘from a physical standpoint, [Rose] is doing terrific.’’ Forman also said all indications have been that Rose would try out for Team USA. ‘‘I still don’t know yet,’’ Rose told Yahoo Sports. ‘‘If I’m feeling right and the time is [right], for sure I will go out there. My body is responding good, but you never know.’’ Chicago Sun-Times

San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker will not take part in this year's World Cup with France as he needs to rest, the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) said on Friday. Parker, a three-time NBA champion, led France to their first continental title last year and was named 2013 European Player of the year. "Tony Parker is not in the squad. (Coach) Vincent Collet and I want him to take some rest after many demanding campaigns with France and demanding seasons with his club," the national technical director Patrick Beesley said in a statement. Hawks restricted free agent center Gustavo Ayon said his surgically-repaired shoulder is not 100 percent and he may not be able to play for Mexico in the upcoming World Cup. Ayon is currently at a training camp in Mexico City with the national team. “If I’m not recovered, I’m not going to the World Cup,” Ayon said in a translated statement. “I will only hurt the team. I’m still working and if the shoulder lets me play, I will surely, but if I have questions, I will not. “I’m fine physically, but the shoulder is not a hundred percent, so even though I can feel good while the injury is not healed completely, I will not be able to play.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins is one of the young players knocking on the door of the national team. Selected in the USA's 28-player pool for 2014-2016, the former University of Kentucky product wants to represent his country at this summer's FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain. "It would be fantastic for me to be part of the team that will defend the world title in Spain. It's one of my main goals this year," Cousins told FIBA.com. FIBA.com

After failing to make the final roster for the 2012 Olympics and being publicly criticised for his lack of maturity by Colangelo, Cousins showed improvement last summer. "What happened in 2012 has been blown out of proportion. The file is closed. I am very thankful that Mr Colangelo gave me another chance last summer," he stated. "I think that I have been doing well during the 2013 training camp and I know that I can bring something to the national team. "I can bring athleticism in the paint, rebounds and high energy. I am a competitor and I want to help the team keep winning titles. One of my dreams is to win gold medals with my country. "I am looking forward to the training camp to show what I can do. Everyone wants to be on the final roster and I am going to do my best in order to convince the coach to select me in the team that is going to defend the world title. I want to be one of the 12 players who are going to Spain," he said. FIBA.com

American Andray Blatche, the country’s prospect for naturalization, is set to arrive here Sunday morning, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes announced on Twitter. Blatche’s naturalization only needs the signature of the President to be completed. “He’s on the plane. Arriving tom, 10am. @drayblatche is coming to town!” Reyes, under the Twitter handle @coachot, posted on his account Saturday. Reyes also said that there is a chance the Brooklyn Nets center Blatche, tapped to give the Philippines a boost in the coming FIBA World Cup in Spain, will watch the game between the Air21 Express and the San Mig Coffee Mixers on Monday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, limited to just 10 games this season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee, will join Team USA for its training camp this summer in preparation for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, national team coach Mike Krzyzewski said Tuesday. "We expect him to be there that last week of July when we're choosing the team in Vegas," Krzyzewski said during an "ESPNU College Basketball" podcast with host Andy Katz. "He can't make the team unless he's ready to go full bore. And knowing Derrick I would think he'll be ready, and hopefully he'll be 100 percent." ESPN.com

The bad news: Rose is making the sort of progress that should allow him to proceed with plans to try to make the Team USA roster for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, a pursuit that will consume more than a month of the summer from mid-August to mid-September. The Bulls can't say so -- especially with Thibodeau serving as a Team USA assistant to Mike Krzyzewski -- but they'd surely prefer that Rose hold off on his full-speed return until training camp next fall. The 20 games ban of Nick Calathes was a shock for the Greek basketball federation, still there’s full support towards the Greek-American guard. On Saturday Kostas Missas, a member of the Greek federation coaching stuff, contacted the player, who gave his side of the story and once more clarified the fact that he never used synthetic testosterone or performance-enhancing drugs. However, Tamoxifen which was detected in Calathes’ samples is banned also from the International Olympic Committee, so the player should have been much more careful. The point is that the ban of Calathes is imposed to the NBA and has to do only with NBA games. There’s no cooperation between the NBA and WADA and until further notice the player is eligible for the upcoming FIBA World Cup. EuroHoops.net

I’m looking forward to training camp. I can’t believe how many Filipinos have come up to me asking about the national team. I’ll do my best out there. I know Marcus (Douthit). I also know the guys we’ll be playing against like (Manu) Ginobili and (Luis) Scola of Argentina. I expect to be ready to play in Spain.” philstar.com
