Jerry Sichting Rumors

The Suns withdrew from contract talks to make Roy Rogers an assistant coach on Jeff Hornacek’s new staff. Veteran assistant coach Jerry Sichting is still expected to be on Hornacek’s coaching staff, along with Mark West moving from his role as vice president of player programs to the bench. The Suns will make two more assistant coach hires now that plans to bring in Rogers were not settled. No assistant coach hire has been formally announced.

After a brief respite during which he went to his Indiana hometown to serve as interim coach for Martinsville High School, he is now back in the NBA as an assistant for the Washington Wizards. But Jerry Sichting will forever be known to the world at large mainly for the two-plus years he spent playing guard for the Celtics [team stats] in the 1980s. “Most people only know me as a Celtic,” said Sichting prior to the C’s 100-94 overtime win against his Wizards last night at the Garden . “Most people outside of Indiana, anyway — and even there most people associate me with playing for the Celtics.”

The Washington Wizards announced today that Jerry Sichting will join Randy Wittman’s staff as an assistant coach. Sichting brings 24 years of experience as an NBA player, coach and talent evaluator to the Wizards’ bench, including 11 seasons serving as an assistant both alongside and under Wittman with the Minnesota Timberwolves. “I’m obviously very familiar with what Jerry will add to our staff and I’m thrilled to have him on board,” said Wittman. “His experience playing, teaching and evaluating the game will be valuable on the bench and on the practice court as we continue to develop our players and establish this team’s identity.”
