Rich Paul Rumors
“I know you guys are going to ask me about my contract situation,” Smith said. “You’ve got my agent’s number so you all can call him. Rich Paul. You all know what it is. Klutch. You dig?” Paul has a reputation for being a tough negotiator. Last off-season, he dragged conversations between the Cavs and Thompson into October before Thompson agreed on a five-year deal worth $82 million.
Smith, 30, the free-agent sharpshooter who is expected to re-sign with the Cavaliers to defend the 2016 NBA championship, married Jewel Harris in a ceremony outside of New York City in New Jersey, near his childhood home. Harris is the mother of his two daughters, Demi and Peyton, and the wedding was attended by several Cavs personnel – including general manager David Griffin and starting center Tristan Thompson, and Smith’s agent Rich Paul.
James is one of several members of the Cavs from last season’s championship team that remain unsigned, including J.R. Smith and head coach Tyronn Lue. James is currently traveling and spending time with family. He will meet with agent Rich Paul and go over his contract options at some point but there is no rush, sources said.
Chris Broussard: LeBron James will not exercise his player option with the Cavs for next season, according to agent Rich Paul. Deadline was Wed @ midnight.
Chris Broussard: On 7/1, James becomes free agent for 3rd straight year. Tho James said he’ll return 2 Cavs, Paul gave no timetable for signing of new deal. With huge salary cap increase, James is eligible for max salary of roughly $30 million. Exact amount not known until July 7.
But that ascension would not have occurred had he not taken becoming an agent seriously and convinced James to return to Cleveland while in a Las Vegas hotel room two summers ago. After four years and two titles with the Heat, James was a free agent and pondered staying in Miami for another run or returning to Cleveland, which he had left so abruptly after failing to win a ring. “We were in Vegas and it was just [his] decision to make, ‘Am I staying somewhere to win a championship or am I going somewhere to win a championship or am I going home to not only try to win one championship but to uplift the city of Cleveland,’ ” Paul said. “That’s what means the most to me. Those people raised him. They supported him. The decision for him was bigger than basketball.”
