STAYING: Jordan Adams, Tony Allen, Vince Carter, Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, JaMychal Green, Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, Zach Randolph, Russ Smith, Jarnell Stokes and Beno Udrih.
ADDED: Matt Barnes (LA Clippers), Patrick Christopher (Free Agent), Jarell Martin (Louisiana State) and Brandan Wright (Phoenix).
GONE: Nick Calathes (Panathinaikos), Kosta Koufos (Sacramento) and Jon Leuer (Phoenix).
STRENGTHS: Frontcourt is absolutely top-notch … Marc Gasol might be the best center in the game and he works fantastic with low-post maestro Zach Randolph … You can’t do much better than Brandan Wright as a backup big … The very efficient Wright gives Grizzlies much-needed athleticism … Overall, the Grizzlies are way more athletic than they were one year ago with Wright and Jeff Green on board … The core of the team has been together for years … Effort and execution are never a problem with this Memphis team … They know each other well … Steady leadership by Mike Conley at the point guard position … No flash, but so much efficiency … Defense is magnificent … Conley, Gasol and Tony Allen are elite defensive players at their respective positions … Just in case they were not gritty enough, they acquired Matt Barnes … Experienced squad that performs well under pressure.
WEAKNESSES: Compared to other Western powers, scoring doesn’t come as easy for Memphis … They are not much of a threat in the open court or beyond the arc … Grizzlies were the second-worst club in three-pointers made last year … Although improved in terms of athleticism, they are far from being elite in that regard … Green has not stepped up for them the way we expected … At age 34 and with 14 NBA seasons behind him, how much left in the tank for Randolph?
PREDICTION: 3rd in the Southwest Division / 6th in the Western Conference.
