Among the expected coaching staff changes in Brooklyn, league sources say, is the likely departure of director of player development Adam Harrington, who has worked closely for years with Nets star Kevin Durant. The Nets hired Harrington three summers before signing Durant and Kyrie Irving in July 2019 and his exit would certainly be classified as unexpected given such longstanding ties to the Nets’ best player. Enclosed is a 2014 piece I wrote on Harrington studying Dirk Nowitzki’s training techniques after playing alongside Nowitzki and Nets coach Steve Nash in Dallas and then incorporating them in Durant’s workout routines when they were together in Oklahoma City.
The Brooklyn Nets announced today the hiring of Mike D’Antoni and Ime Udoka as assistant coaches and Amar’e Stoudemire as a player development assistant. They join assistant coach Jacque Vaughn, assistant coach/director of player development Adam Harrington, assistant coach Jordan Ott, assistant coach/player development Tiago Splitter and player development coordinator Ryan Forehan-Kelly on Head Coach Steve Nash’s staff.
“We’ve assembled an experienced staff of high-character individuals with varied backgrounds, both on and off the court, that will help create a solid foundation for me and our players,” said Nash. “When I set out to build this staff, I wanted to put together a committed group that would connect with our players and help put them in the best position to succeed as a team. With coaching and playing experience at the highest level and a deep background in player development, I’m confident that we’ve put the right people in place to lead us forward.”
When Budden said that he’d hoped Durant would be in New York for the podcast, the Nets star replied that he was in California since “the Nets (are) out here working out, so I had to stay. A few of us, four or five of us, out here.” Durant, Irving and some other Nets – of both the Brooklyn and Long Island variety, like Spencer Dinwiddie, Devin Cannady and Jaylen Hands – have been working out in Los Angeles. Director of player development Adam Harrington, Durant’s longtime shooting coach, was with them, with Blake Griffin and Allonzo Trier joining in training and playing full-court.
