Sign him!!” Those were the words of Jayson Tatum in a tweet responding to his former Duke teammate and close friend Amile Jefferson playing for Team USA last week. His message was above a video of Jefferson ball-faking and pivoting on the block in a way that was reminiscent of a former Celtic of the same last name. Big Al Jefferson had all those Kevin McHale moves in his bag, plus the size and touch to make it thrive even in a league moving away from the post.
It’s one of a few things Amile Jefferson could bring to the table as he battles with Javonte Green for the last spot on the Celtics roster. As Jay King reported Friday for The Athletic, Jefferson will sign a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics. The 6-foot-9 power forward had a strong G League season two years ago for the Magic while on a two-way contract and earned a promotion to the full NBA deal with Orlando last season. Yet he managed fewer minutes than in his debut season, notching 74 in 18 games and going 5-for-14 from the field and from the line. He put up massive numbers in the G League in just seven games, averaging 25.9 points and 12.6 boards, but most of the flexibility he showed on offense didn’t translate to the NBA level beyond a few nice plays.
Though the shot is far from a go-to move, he has nice fluidity and bounciness for a power forward and is able to attack from the high post out in the midrange with a speed advantage. It gives him some chances at body contact fouls that he can shoot through, getting to the line and opening up rare and-one opportunities in the floater range. He also can put up floaters with his left hand when he has to, though he strongly favors using his right. That would be an interesting wrinkle to the Celtics’ big-man rotation, as Grant Williams doesn’t appear to have that in his bag quite yet. While Williams is way ahead of his age at reading when to set and slip screens, Jefferson has the wing-like skill to make moves like this off the dribble, even if that dribble gets pretty sloppy at times.
