Long considered one of the consummate professionals and gentlemen in the NBA, McDyess played 15 seasons before retiring with the San Antonio Spurs in 2011. Several knee surgeries between 2001 and 2004 perhaps curtailed McDyess prime as perennial All-Star selection, but McDyess had several productive seasons as a role player with Detroit and San Antonio before leaving the league after the 2011 playoffs. In his final season, McDyess averaged 5.3 points and 5.4 rebounds in 19 minutes a game for the Spurs.
The Andre Iguodala trade by the Nuggets assures they will have a medalist in a fifth straight Olympics. Either USA’s Iguodala or Russia’s Timofey Mozgov have to medal. Denver’s medalists since 1996 are Sarunas Marciulionis (1996 bronze, Lithuania), Antonio McDyess (2000 gold, USA) and Carmelo Anthony (2004 bronze, 2008 gold, USA).

McDyess and his wife are expecting their first child in a few days and he said he is comfortable with his decision to leave the NBA after 16 seasons, the last two with the Spurs. The former All-Star and Olympic gold medal winner paid a short visit to the Spurs locker room after the Rockets’ 105-85 drubbing, to the delight of coach Gregg Popovich. “The best part of this whole night was seeing Antonio,” Popovich said.
Admitting it felt strange to be sitting in the stands 10 rows behind the Spurs bench, and even weirder seeing Tim Duncan sitting out the second half of the third game of the season because the Spurs were being blown out by the Rockets, Antonio McDyess put to rest any thoughts that he might elect to come out of retirement at any time this season. “Uh-uh,” he said, flashing his characteristic smile. “A lot of people have been asking, but it’s not happening.”
