Germany will play against Tunisia and Japan in Saitama near Tokyo on August 23rd and 24th respectively. On August 26, the squad will head to Shenzhen, China where the World Cup group phase will be played. The 13 players currently in Japan for the German NT are: Dennis Schroder, Maodo Lo, Ismet Akpinar, Isaac Bonga, Andreas Obst, Robin Benzing, Paul Zipser, Niels Giffey, Johannes Thiemann, Danilo Barthell, Maximilian Kleber, Daniel Theis, Johannes Voigtmann.
Germany picked up another win at the VTG Supercup as they routed the Czech Republic 87-68. Dennis Schroder once again led the way with 21 points and seven assists followed by Daniel Theis’ 17 and Maodo Lo’s ten points.
Germany will be looking to make a splash at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in China with their young and exciting NBA-based trio of Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis and Maximilian Kleber. The three have been named in the 16-man squad for the tournament, which tips off in just under a month. Germany’s First Round Games in Group G will be against France (September 1), Dominican Republic (September 3) and Jordan (September 5).
Chris Forsberg: Celtics would like to bring Daniel Theis back and can fit his small QO without impeding Kemba space. Terry Rozier’s QO can be rescinded whenever team needs that space to sign Kemba and gives them some time to examine any moves that could be made.
Jay King: Daniel Theis and Terry Rozier are both good to go. Aron Baynes is close, and a possibility to return Sunday, per Stevens.
John Karalis: Celtics just announced Daniel Theis is available. He had been questionable with a sore knee
A. Sherrod Blakely: The #Celtics Daniel Theis (foot) will be available to play tonight for the #Celtics vs #Blazers, says Brad Stevens.
Tom Westerholm: The Celtics announce Daniel Theis has been upgraded to probable. He must be feeling a lot better.
A. Sherrod Blakely: Daniel Theis did some light running on the treadmill today and some light shooting. He told @NBCSBoston that he’s targeting a return to the #Celtics lineup next week. 👍🏿
The Celts also had to consider that next summer Marcus Morris will be an unrestricted free agent, Aron Baynes can opt out, Terry Rozier, Daniel Theis and Brad Wanamaker can be restricted free agents, Kyrie Irving is planning to opt out (and, he says, sign a more lucrative deal here), and Al Horford can sever his deal, too. “There is some uncertainty in the offseason, as there always is,” Ainge said. “But the bottom line is he’s a 22-year-old unique player that we really like, and, again, a player that we like as much who he is as what he is at this point in his career. “Having Guerschon gives us continuity. He knows our system. He’s loved by everybody. It’s just not easy to find that type of player.”
Jay King: Daniel Theis is available tonight. Hurt himself during the first half last game. Brad said he planned to go small with Semi at the 5 anyway.
Jared Weiss: Aron Baynes upgraded to questionable for tomorrow night and Theis is also listed as questionable with a foot sprain.
Abby Chin: Takeaways from #Celtics practice: Stevens says Irving, Hayward and Theis made noticeable jumps during week of practice. Robert Williams is back after missing two days with illness. Kyrie got a big shipment of new shoes & doesn’t know which he’ll wear for opening night. pic.twitter.com/5o9KUE5fNn
Scott Souza: Daniel Theis out late shooting today. Brad Stevens said he looked great in double session coming off knee surgery today. Theis was cleared in final days before start of camp. #Celtics
A. Sherrod Blakely: The #Celtics Daniel Theis said Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward both “look good” in games played at the team’s practice facility recently.
Theis said he is looking forward to doing some 1-on-1, 2-on-2 and 5-on-5 work later this month and be ready to play once training camp starts. “I’m still a little bit away,” Theis said. “Every day they put in new stuff. It’s the day after that’s important to see how my knee reacts. (Wednesday), with more speed. (Thursday) we’ll see how my knee reacts. For now, my knee never reacted bad. My main goal is to be ready for training camp.”
Brian Robb: Daniel Theis indicated he’s had no setbacks with his recovery thus far. “For now, I haven’t had a bad reaction. I have started sprinting and jump shots and my knee has never reacted badly. There’s no timetable for it, but I think and hope I can do one-on-one stuff this month.”
Gary Washburn: The #Celtics have no intention on waiving Daniel Theis, thus making his contract guaranteed for next season, according to a source. Today was deadline to make any move.
Mark Murphy: Theis on how Celtics carried on despite losing so many players, including him: “From the first game here in Cleveland when Gordon got hurt everybody got tougher, get into new roles. Every time somebody missed a game, somebody stepped up.”
Gordon Hayward: Unfortunately, the training room has become a lot more crowded over the last few weeks. It seems like one thing after another with injuries these days. Even in the same game, you have Marcus Smart tear a tendon in his thumb and had to get surgery, and that same night, Daniel Theis hurts his knee and he is done for the year. That was unreal. Then you have Jaylen take that scary fall that cost him a couple weeks with the concussion, and now Kyrie needs surgery to clean out his knee.
Jared Weiss: Celtics officially announce Daniel Theis had surgery on the lateral meniscus in his left knee and is out for the season. He is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp this fall.
A. Sherrod Blakely: The #Celtics Daniel Theis expected to have surgery on the torn meniscus in his left knee tomorrow. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery that can maybe get him back at some point in the playoffs. 🤞🏾
Daniel Theis will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left meniscus. Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania was first to report. Theis’ recovery period will be determined based on the damage found by surgeons, but he is expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to a person with knowledge of the injury. he person spoke with Celtics Wire under the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
The main factor in [Daniel Theis’] recovery time will be whether doctors elect to perform an arthroscopic debridement procedure, which removes a piece of the meniscus where it is torn, or a full repair. A debridement of the meniscus typically has a 2-3 month recovery period, while a full repair can require at least double the recovery time. The scope of the surgery will be determined by the imaging and examination already being done, as well as the condition of the meniscus when they go in for surgery.
Scott Souza: #Celtics Marcus Morris on Daniel Theis tearing meniscus: “That really hurt me because he played well. He’s a great dude, a great teammate, always coming to work. For something like that to happen is definitely tough. It’s just the #NBA, man.”
Jay King: Stevens said Semi Ojeleye could play the 5 some when the Celtics need to go small now that Theis is injured. Yabu is headed back from Maine to rejoin the team.
Shams Charania: Sources: Celtics center Daniel Theis has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and will undergo season-ending surgery. Theis emerged as an important reserve for Boston this season.
Marc D’Amico: Brad Stevens has good news regarding Daniel Theis’ hamstring injury: “He did some shooting last night and felt really good. He’ll go through shootaround and will likely be available to play (tonight).”
Jay King: Al Horford just walked out to the Celtics bench to watch this ceremony. Gordon Hayward, Daniel Theis, Aron Baynes among the players already there. The others filing in, too, to take all of this in.
Over the past two years, the Celtics have been busy in Europe. In 2016, they drafted French forward Guerschon Yabusele and Croatian center Ante Zizic. Then last summer they signed German forward Daniel Theis and veteran point guard Shane Larkin, who spent last season playing in Spain. With so much focus on college basketball, and for obvious logistical reasons, the Celtics’ small and diligent Boston-based scouting staff cannot have a constant presence overseas. So that is what Matkevicius is tasked with, and the Celtics’ lone full-time staffer and scout in Europe played a key role in all of the recent additions. “Benas has an amazing work ethic,” Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. “He just seems tireless.”
Q: How does it feel being one of the fans’ favourite players in Boston, and did you expect to play such a role? And the second one is are there any personal teasing with other German NBA players because you are the only one playing on a team at the top of the league? Daniel Theis: First off, I would say the Boston fans are special anyway, so every game is sold out. Every play I get, it’s loud from the fans for me. I mean, I should say some fans. It’s an honour for me, for sure. I just try to play like I’ve played the last years, bring energy. And the second one, for the other German players, now in Chicago they’ve made a run. They’re getting better. They have played the last year on the highest level. [Chicago’s Paul Zipser] played a lot of games. So I hope all the other German players and teams they play for, they’re going to get better this season.
Q: Obviously you began wearing the protective mask due to an unfortunate injury. Are you now starting to get used to the mask, and are you going to miss it when it’s gone? Daniel Theis: Since I got the second one, the fitted one, it’s way better so I can see more. But [I think] it’s gone for the London game. I’m not going to miss it.

Boston Celtics big man Daniel Theis broke his nose during Friday night’s loss to the Utah Jazz, according to head coach Brad Stevens. After the team announced Theis was not expected to travel for Saturday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, there was an apparent reversal of plans. Theis did fly with the team. No word was given on his availability for the Grizzlies game, but it’s a good sign he made the trip.
The Celtics will enter training camp with potentially 11 new players, including four new starters — Irving, Hayward, Marcus Morris, and perhaps Jaylen Brown to join Al Horford. Ainge also added Aron Baynes, Daniel Theis, and Shane Larkin, while taking Jayson Tatum and Semi Ojeleye in the draft. “This isn’t any sort of plan like we wanted to make a whole bunch of changes — part of it is just managing payroll and getting guys to fit on the court, just building a team,” Ainge said. “It’s not about getting rid of somebody or bringing new faces in, but in the world we live in today you have a salary cap and a luxury tax and there are short contracts that are attached. When I played, I signed a six-year contract. Now, most contracts are four years [at the longest]. It’s just the nature of our business and it’s not ideal not to have continuity. But there are rewards for a freshness. What really matters is how well they play and as I said, time is our judge.”
