Germany will play against Tunisia and Japan in Saitama near Tokyo on August 23rd and 24th respectively. On August 26, the squad will head to Shenzhen, China where the World Cup group phase will be played. The 13 players currently in Japan for the German NT are: Dennis Schroder, Maodo Lo, Ismet Akpinar, Isaac Bonga, Andreas Obst, Robin Benzing, Paul Zipser, Niels Giffey, Johannes Thiemann, Danilo Barthell, Maximilian Kleber, Daniel Theis, Johannes Voigtmann.
Germany will be looking to make a splash at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in China with their young and exciting NBA-based trio of Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis and Maximilian Kleber. The three have been named in the 16-man squad for the tournament, which tips off in just under a month. Germany’s First Round Games in Group G will be against France (September 1), Dominican Republic (September 3) and Jordan (September 5).

The Celts also had to consider that next summer Marcus Morris will be an unrestricted free agent, Aron Baynes can opt out, Terry Rozier, Daniel Theis and Brad Wanamaker can be restricted free agents, Kyrie Irving is planning to opt out (and, he says, sign a more lucrative deal here), and Al Horford can sever his deal, too. “There is some uncertainty in the offseason, as there always is,” Ainge said. “But the bottom line is he’s a 22-year-old unique player that we really like, and, again, a player that we like as much who he is as what he is at this point in his career. “Having Guerschon gives us continuity. He knows our system. He’s loved by everybody. It’s just not easy to find that type of player.”
Theis said he is looking forward to doing some 1-on-1, 2-on-2 and 5-on-5 work later this month and be ready to play once training camp starts. “I’m still a little bit away,” Theis said. “Every day they put in new stuff. It’s the day after that’s important to see how my knee reacts. (Wednesday), with more speed. (Thursday) we’ll see how my knee reacts. For now, my knee never reacted bad. My main goal is to be ready for training camp.”

Gordon Hayward: Unfortunately, the training room has become a lot more crowded over the last few weeks. It seems like one thing after another with injuries these days. Even in the same game, you have Marcus Smart tear a tendon in his thumb and had to get surgery, and that same night, Daniel Theis hurts his knee and he is done for the year. That was unreal. Then you have Jaylen take that scary fall that cost him a couple weeks with the concussion, and now Kyrie needs surgery to clean out his knee.

Daniel Theis will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left meniscus. Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania was first to report. Theis’ recovery period will be determined based on the damage found by surgeons, but he is expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to a person with knowledge of the injury. he person spoke with Celtics Wire under the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The main factor in [Daniel Theis’] recovery time will be whether doctors elect to perform an arthroscopic debridement procedure, which removes a piece of the meniscus where it is torn, or a full repair. A debridement of the meniscus typically has a 2-3 month recovery period, while a full repair can require at least double the recovery time. The scope of the surgery will be determined by the imaging and examination already being done, as well as the condition of the meniscus when they go in for surgery.
Over the past two years, the Celtics have been busy in Europe. In 2016, they drafted French forward Guerschon Yabusele and Croatian center Ante Zizic. Then last summer they signed German forward Daniel Theis and veteran point guard Shane Larkin, who spent last season playing in Spain. With so much focus on college basketball, and for obvious logistical reasons, the Celtics’ small and diligent Boston-based scouting staff cannot have a constant presence overseas. So that is what Matkevicius is tasked with, and the Celtics’ lone full-time staffer and scout in Europe played a key role in all of the recent additions. “Benas has an amazing work ethic,” Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. “He just seems tireless.”
Q: How does it feel being one of the fans’ favourite players in Boston, and did you expect to play such a role? And the second one is are there any personal teasing with other German NBA players because you are the only one playing on a team at the top of the league? Daniel Theis: First off, I would say the Boston fans are special anyway, so every game is sold out. Every play I get, it’s loud from the fans for me. I mean, I should say some fans. It’s an honour for me, for sure. I just try to play like I’ve played the last years, bring energy. And the second one, for the other German players, now in Chicago they’ve made a run. They’re getting better. They have played the last year on the highest level. [Chicago’s Paul Zipser] played a lot of games. So I hope all the other German players and teams they play for, they’re going to get better this season.
Boston Celtics big man Daniel Theis broke his nose during Friday night’s loss to the Utah Jazz, according to head coach Brad Stevens. After the team announced Theis was not expected to travel for Saturday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, there was an apparent reversal of plans. Theis did fly with the team. No word was given on his availability for the Grizzlies game, but it’s a good sign he made the trip.
The Celtics will enter training camp with potentially 11 new players, including four new starters — Irving, Hayward, Marcus Morris, and perhaps Jaylen Brown to join Al Horford. Ainge also added Aron Baynes, Daniel Theis, and Shane Larkin, while taking Jayson Tatum and Semi Ojeleye in the draft. “This isn’t any sort of plan like we wanted to make a whole bunch of changes — part of it is just managing payroll and getting guys to fit on the court, just building a team,” Ainge said. “It’s not about getting rid of somebody or bringing new faces in, but in the world we live in today you have a salary cap and a luxury tax and there are short contracts that are attached. When I played, I signed a six-year contract. Now, most contracts are four years [at the longest]. It’s just the nature of our business and it’s not ideal not to have continuity. But there are rewards for a freshness. What really matters is how well they play and as I said, time is our judge.”
