In a Monday appearance on flagship radio station SportsTalk 790 in Houston, Tilman Fertitta explained his reasons for optimism: We have as good a chance as anybody. You have Russ and James, who want this, and P.J., and Eric and Covington, it’s just a really good team. And then [Danuel] House and [Austin] Rivers. When you start looking at our eight-man rotation, you just go ‘Wow, this is pretty darn good.’
Ariza was no longer donning Rockets red, but in House, D’Antoni and the coaching staff saw a physical specimen who had real potential as a 3&D stud. His combination of outside shooting, athleticism, versatility and IQ made him the standout choice, and McLemore’s similar skill set only complemented the 1-2 punch of sorts. “He’s more than just a three-and-D guy, although he’s really good at that,” D’Antoni said. “That’s probably what we need more than anything, but I think he can do a little bit of everything.”
Rockets forward Danuel House Jr. missed Friday’s game against the Clippers with a sore left shoulder, hoping to return to play Sunday against the Mavericks. But having to sit out just two games after he came back from a bruised back was not frustrating, he said, when considering that this injury could have been much worse. “You can’t be mad,” House said. “It’s part of the game. Take the good with the bad. I’m excited it did not go as far as it possibly could have. It looked bad. It felt bad, too. I wanted to make sure I was still in one piece.”
“Throughout the years we’ve worked on drive and kicks, as well as other passing (aspects) and relocating,” trainer Kenny Ellis said. “But at the end of the day, Danuel’s IQ is pretty high.” House had the fifth-most assists (3.5) amongst all players in the NEX Pro League, placing second among forwards. Once again, sample size matters, but his offseason output (15 games, 22.8 ppg) aligns pretty nicely with his previous G-League timeshare with the Vipers (18, 20.7, 3.7 assists) with more time on the ball (24.5% usage).
Jonathan Feigen: If the Rockets can land a bargain at that price it could be a significant move, but failing that, they could dip into that to try to bring back Austin Rivers, who became their sixth man. There are holes to fill, however. The Rockets really did not have a backup power forward and were very thin and inexperienced at small forward, relying on Danuel House Jr. and three-guard lineups. They also might need to bolster their options at center, with Nenê generally limited to half the season, Kenneth Faried a free agent and Isaiah Hartenstein, though progressing, still a project. They also can make some strides in their level of play, particularly for Capela who disappointed against the Warriors.
