“Listen, at the end of the day, I think he’s a role model,” Avdija said. “He’s a great player. I think he did a mistake, but you need to understand that he gives (an) example to people. People look up to him. You know what I’m saying? So you can think whatever you want, you can do whatever you want — just I don’t think it’s right to go out in public and publish it and let little kids that follow you see it and the generations that come after to think like that. Because it’s not true. And I don’t think it’s fair. Hopefully, he’s sorry for what he said. Other than that, I don’t have any other room to say anything about it. Y’all probably can guess my comments on it. But that’s about it.”
One NBA general manager remarked to NBC Sports Washington last season that they were surprised at Avdija’s rapid progress on the defensive end. They missed it in the pre-draft process. That sentiment, perhaps shared by others around the league, also serves as an indirect reminder of his offensive potential. He was widely projected as a top-10 pick because of his mobility and ball control at 6-foot-9. Avdija still believes in those capabilities and hopes to unlock them over time.
DeRozan had 32 points, including 12 points in the fourth quarter. But he shot 3-for-9 in the final frame and Beal will take that, knowing what happened in January. Beal requested to guard DeRozan after he was fouled by Deni Avdija with 3:29 to go. DeRozan was 8-of-9 from the free throw line at that point and Beal felt he was less likely to get calls if he was being guarded by another star. DeRozan did get to the line for two more shots, but Beal felt he was allowed to defend with more contact. “Let me give him a different look. Let me mess with the ball, jab at the ball, tap his elbow without the ref looking. Doing little stuff that I can get away with because they were a little whistle-happy down there,” Beal said.
