Even with a 10-day deal, Walton isn’t worried about making a big impression and putting additional pressure on himself. He wants to take things in stride and figure out what the coaching staff wants and to transition into that. It’s what he’s always done — and what got him a shot with the Miami Heat as an undrafted rookie. “I can shoot it and that’s what I hung my hat on. I’m a better defender than I get credit for. And overall, I think I’m just a heady player,” Walton said. “I’m this guy that’s always thinking two steps ahead.”
What the last year amounted to is a crash course in the real world. “It opened my eyes to the business side of the game,” Walton confessed earlier this week. “Going into it, it’s all about the love of the game. Obviously, I love basketball, I love what I do. I remember at the beginning, I walked into agency meetings and I was like, ‘Look, I don’t really care about none of the other stuff. I just want to make sure I’m in the best position to perform.’ I mean, how dumb does that sound? That’s how naive I was and that’s how I approached it.” Walton, 23, says he knows where he’ll play next season. An agreement is in place, but his agent, Mark Bartelstein, is requiring him to sit on the news until next week. All Walton can put out publicly is this: “Long story short, I’m good. I’m going to a great situation. All I can say.” Having that settled makes it easier to decompress and process his rookie season and the lessons learned.
The Miami HEAT announced today that Derrick Walton Jr. has re-joined the HEAT from the Sioux Falls Skyforce as part of his two-way contract. Walton Jr. has appeared in 26 games (all starts) with the Skyforce this season averaging 16.3 points, 6.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.46 steals and 32.4 minutes while shooting 44 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from three-point range and 90.1 percent from the foul line.
