On this early March afternoon, he was participating in a routine one-on-one drill. The ball had swung around the perimeter and eventually would go to the ball-handler at the top of the key, who was allowed up to three dribbles to make a move. The defender — in this case, a sacrificial lamb named Garrison Mathews — would scurry inside the 3-point line, fundamentally closing out and hoping to deter a basket. “Hoping” is the operative word here. It was Wall’s turn to go. He received a pass and put the ball on the ground. One dribble, two steps and liftoff. He threw down a lefty slam glorious enough that its release today should quench any fans’ thirst for the sports world’s first new highlight in weeks.
There are other minor moves Sheppard has made that stand out as good ones. He may have found something in Garrison Mathews, a rookie on a two-way deal who can light it up from three. Anzejs Pasecniks and Gary Payton II have been nice surprises as end-of-the-roster guys. And signing Ish Smith for less money instead of retaining Tomas Satoransky has proven to be a smart decision.
“The young players that we brought in, they’re not one-and-done kids,” Sheppard said. “There’s guys, the four rookies that we have, Rui, Admiral, we added Justin Robinson, we added Garrison Mathews, they all played for great college coaches, great programs, three-year players minimum. They’re rookies, but by pedigree they’ve accomplished a great deal, so they’re coming in the door, we’re not starting remedial basketball.”
