Adam Himmelsbach: Hearing that one Cs move to keep an eye on tomorrow is Jabari Bird and cash being sent to another team to lower the Cs’ tax bill and open a roster spot. Bird would then be waived by the team that was paid to acquire him. But his legal issues could still complicate matters a bit.

The Celtics, like every other team in the NBA, are preparing for the possibility of one or two trades setting off an avalanche. But according to teams that have spoken to them, the Celts may be looking more at players around the edges, rather than at more significant deals, as Thursday’s trade deadline approaches. In fact, they could be more active in the buyout market later, if, as most anticipate, a roster spot will become free when the Jabari Bird situation is adjudicated by the league office.

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird faces new charges in connection with his domestic violence case. According to court documents, the 24-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of witness intimidation and a threat to commit a crime at his arraignment in Brighton Municipal Court today. These charges stem from the original arrest, and are not new allegations. Bird was released on his previously posted $50,000 bail. He already faces assault, strangulation, and kidnapping for the September incident in which he is accused of strangling his girlfriend more than a dozen times in his home. The unnamed victim escaped when Bird began to suffer “seizure-like symptoms.”
As the league continues its investigation of his arrest, Boston signed guard Marcus Georges-Hunt to a non-guaranteed contract. The Celtics can release Bird but they would have to eat his $1.4 million salary if they do it now. And if Bird is suspended before the start of the season, Georges-Hunt would still need to be waived. A player who is suspended by the NBA is not transferred to the suspended list until after the fifth game. Bird would have to remain on the active list for the first five games of the season.

Jay King: Marcus Georges-Hunt is indeed headed to training camp with the Celtics, source confirms. Jabari Bird currently holds the team’s 15th roster spot, but the NBA is investigating the domestic violence charges against him.

Adrian Wojnarowski: The uncertainty surrounding Jabari Bird’s legal issues, contract and future with Celtics could impact Georges-Hunt’s opportunity to eventually land on regular season roster. There’s no telling the timing or resolution for Bird with Celtics.
