New York eyeing Jalen Brunson?

Now itโ€™s up to Dallasโ€™ new coach, Jason Kidd, to decide whether Brunson, a second-round pick out of Villanova, is the guy to build around and lock in long term. The Mavericks will exercise his team option for next season and can offer him an extension. If Kidd lowballs him, Brunson will decline and the Mavericks will be forced to trade him or risk losing Brunson to 2022 free agency. The Knicks have Brunson on their radar.
Kevin O’Connor: Teams are scared off by the money, the health, and possibly his diminishing production. And because of the picks owed to the Knicks, Dallas can’t deal another first-round pick until at least 2025. Not only that, aside from Jalen Brunson Dallas’ young players haven’t shown much. So the team has limited trading power in terms of his draft picks and players and they also have some tough decisions to make this coming offseason as well with a number of different upcoming free agents.
With the Clippers daring other Mavericks to beat them, Dallas’ role players responded. Finney-Smith and guards Jalen Brunson and Tim Hardaway Jr. combined to score 34 points on 12-of-15 shooting in the second half. “When Luka gets going, I just try to stay ready, because I know they’re about to start trapping,” said Finney-Smith, who finished with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a corner 3 off a beautiful, cross-court feed from Doncic to give the Mavericks the lead for good with 2:50 remaining. “That’s when he gets to finding people, slinging the ball across the court, finding guys when we’re open. I just know they’re going to send two guys at Luka. You’ve just got to be ready to shoot.”
Jalen Brunson didn’t recall meeting many other people who shared his name until reaching high school, but started hearing it more in college. No matter how many other Jalens hit the scene, though, Rick Brunson wouldn’t let his son forget about his eponymous teammate, who has gone on to inspire a younger generation not only through his name and basketball career, but also through philanthropic work as well. “It’s pretty cool to see someone like that with the impact on and off the court and the things he’s doing in his community back home,” Brunson said. “It’s pretty special so I’ve definitely got a sense of pride.”
