In a world without the coronavirus, Detroit would have been deciding early this month whether to extend the contracts of a trio of second-year guards or to waive the players. Svi Mykhailiuk’s 2020-2021 contract would have been guaranteed if he were on the roster on July 4. Decisions had been due July 6 on Khyri Thomas, and July 9 for Bruce Brown. Those decisions now don’t have to be made until October, multiple league sources said.
Rod Beard: Good news for #Pistons: Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose are not listed AT ALL on the injury report for Friday at #Hornets. Tony Snell (left hip flexor strain) is listed as probable. Reggie Jackson and Khyri Thomas are OUT and Sekou Doumbouya and Jordan Bone are with @grdrive.

Casey: The other kid we haven’t talked about is Bruce Brown and Khyri Thomas. Those two kids, so that group together, the free agents, the rookies, that’s an infusion of a lot of good pieces to the way we want to try to play. Bruce Brown could play point, two, three – he definitely can guard all three positions. That young man has a bright future, as does Khyri. Khyri was off and on with injuries this summer so Bruce had a great summer of working, nose to the grind, but I expect a lot of the same things from Khyri.
Bobby Marks, ESPN: The Hamidou Diallo (Oklahoma City) and Khyri Thomas (Detroit) signings now have 17 players selected in the second round of the June Draft under contract. Each of the second round picks have at a minimum of three years on their contract except for Jevon Carter (Memphis). The point guard was restricted to only two years because Memphis had signed Kyle Anderson to the full midlevel exception. The top three players with the most guaranteed money are Rodions Kurucs ($4.8M), Jalen Brunson ($4.3M) and Gary Trent Jr. ($3.9M). In addition, the last three players selected in the second round, Thomas Welsh, George King and Kostas Antetokounmpo were signed to Two-Way Contracts.

Detroit is right at $121.9M, $1.7M below the tax after the Glenn Robinson III signing. The roster takes into account $5.9M in non-guaranteed money of Reggie Bullock, Eric Moreland and Dwight Buycks. The Pistons should be able to remain the below the tax even if they sign their two-second picks, Bruce Brown Jr. and Khyri Thomas.
