The rules were simple and were part of the reason that he chose Wade: Morey could only select inactive players through the 2K draft, unless they currently play for the Rockets. So James Harden, shockingly rated at 79 overall, was certainly an option for Morey. And that’s exactly who he took to complement Wade in the backcourt. The Rockets are known for their distinctive small-ball style of play, and Morey took that same approach to the game, though the league had not yet reached that type of modernity yet. Shane Battier (former Rocket) was next, followed by the likes of Nikola Mirotic, Jameer Nelson and Marcus Camby.
In addition to Bryant, Duncan, Garnett and Bosh, other players nominated for the first time this year include Shawn Marion, Michael Finley, Mark Eaton and Buck Williams. Meanwhile, Chauncey Billups, Mark Jackson, Tim Hardaway, Richard Hamilton, Chris Webber, Ben Wallace and Marcus Camby are among those on the ballot who have been nominated multiple times.
Masai Ujiri: I founded Giants of Africa in 2003. In the beginning, the goal was to uncover talent. I was saying to myself, “How do we find the next Hakeem Olajuwon?” Back then I was a scout for the Nuggets. That first camp we hosted was in Nigeria, my home country. We used baby blue Denver gear for all the campers. Kiki Vandeweghe was our GM at the time, and he told our equipment manager to get me the cheapest shorts and practice jerseys we had, so that we could get as many uniforms as possible. And then we needed shoes, so we put a giant bin in the middle of the locker room. Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin, Marcus Camby—they all gave me shoes by just throwing their old ones into the bin.
Among the other notable nominees: Sloan’s old friend Johnny “Red” Kerr, Del Harris, Curt Gowdy, Marv Albert, Jim Valvano, Billy Packer, Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc, the 1936 U.S. Olympic team, Chris Webber, Tim Hardaway, Rip Hamilton, Dale Ellis, Marcus Camby, Muggsy Bogues, Chauncey Billups, Mark Aguirre, Jack Sikma, Ben Wallace, Sidney Moncrief, Bobby Jones, Kevin Johnson, Rudy Tomjanovich, George Karl, Bob Huggins, Cotton Fitzsimmons, Bill Fitch, Rick Adelman, Rollie Massimino and Gene Keady.
Police found 9-year-old Marcus McGhee dead in a lake on the family’s property Saturday morning, two days after the little boy with autism vanished from a Thanksgiving Day gathering at the Pearland home of his uncle, former NBA star Marcus Camby. The boy’s body was discovered about 7 a.m. in the water of an L-shaped lake behind Camby’s sprawling home, said Lt. Onesimo Lopez, spokesman for the Pearland Police Department.
Texas police and volunteers suspended their search on Friday for the 9-year-old nephew of former NBA star Marcus Camby who disappeared Thursday from his relatives home in Pearland, Texas. Marcus McGhee disappeared from the residence at about 4 p.m., according to the Dallas Morning News. He was seen on surveillance video leaving the back of the residence. The boy, a native of Connecticut, was visiting Camby’s home for Thanksgiving. A search group on Friday searched a nearby bayou that “may be attractive to autistic children,” police said on Facebook.
From Marcus Camby, who helped him build a program at Massachusetts, to Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins, who solidified a powerhouse at Kentucky, Calipari was backed by dozens of the players who have made him one of college basketball’s most successful coaches. “As you can see, I have been blessed to have all those opportunities,” Calipari said, “but the reason I stand here is more about the players I’ve coached.”
Free agent center Marcus Camby is progressing in his rehabilitation from foot surgery and expects to be fully healthy by February’s end to join an NBA team, a league source told RealGM. Camby, who underwent surgery before the season for a torn plantar fascia, returned to on-court activities two weeks ago and has shown positive signs in his rehab. Teams must finalize postseason-eligible players by March 1.
Camby said after he was waived by the Rockets he hoped to be able to return to his hometown team this season and that is still the case. “(My) preference is to stay home,” said Camby, who lives in Pearland. Camby, who played for the Rockets during the 2011-12 season, was the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and has averaged 9.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game during his career.
Nearly a week after center Marcus Camby wanted to make a decision about whether to have surgery on the torn plantar fascia tissue in his left foot, he said he will put off that step as long as possible to continue with rehab in the hopes of avoiding surgery. Camby did not sound optimistic, however, that rehab will work. “Minimal progress, so still evaluating and rehabbing,” Camby said. “I definitely want to get out there as soon as possible, so I’m doing all the precautionary steps the training staff wants me to do. It’s just a wait-and-see approach right now. Surgery has always been the last resort. I think we pretty much have done everything else. We’ll give it a little more time before we make that decision.” Camby, who has been unable to practice this preseason, would miss another two months should he opt for the surgery.
Rockets center Marcus Camby, expected to be out another two weeks with a foot injury, could be out much longer if things don’t improve soon. Camby said Wednesday that the therapy he has been trying is to improve his condition enough to avoid surgery that would likely keep him out for as much as two months. “My plantar fascia is torn,” Camby said. “I’m trying to do whatever I can to avoid surgery. We’re just going to rehab it and see how it goes in the next two weeks and take it from there. We don’t want to rehab it and nurse it and have it still be lingering. That is something I’m going to sit back and figure out and definitely look toward long term, as the season progresses to the second half of the season. I have to be smart about it.”
