General manager Bob Myers said he had cordial talks with Jackson daily about who might fit and reiterated that it didn’t make any sense to bring in a player to sit on the bench. There was some talk about guards Maalik Wayns and Chris Douglas-Roberts, forwards Josh Childress, Dominic McGuire and Chris Wright and center Mickell Gladness. But the Warriors agreed that Thomas was the right guy, because he’s a defense-first wing who is athletic enough to finish in transition – some of the very attributes the Warriors lost when Brandon Rush tore his anterior cruciate ligment in the season’s second game.
Q: Ira, who do you think will take the last two spots the Heat have left? — Paul, Miami. A: It is a constantly evolving decision. None of the lower-end big men have been particularly impressive, although Mickell Gladness had his defensive moments Thursday against the Clippers. Terrel Harris hardly has distanced himself, while Garrett Temple is somewhat intriguing. At the moment, I still think Josh Harrellson might get the benefit of the doubt up front based on his body of work last season with the Knicks.
The Miami Heat now have 15 players under contract, with Friday’s announcement of the signings of center Mickell Gladness and forward Jarvis Varnado. Gladness spent the start of last season with the Heat before finishing the season with the Golden State Warriors. Varnado, selected by the Heat with the No. 41 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft out of Mississippi State, has bounced between Italy and Israel the past two seasons.
The Heat plans to have further internal discussions about whether to sign someone from that group, Mickell Gladness (who played for their summer league team after splitting last season between Miami and Golden State) or invite second-round rookie Justin Hamilton to training camp. Milicic’s agent said Thursday there has been nothing new since an initial Heat inquiry more than a week ago.
