“I always want to bring a defensive presence first,” McBride said following Tuesday’s 117-96 victory over the Pistons. “I feel like that gets my offense going. Obviously I was able to get some steals and turn it into buckets. So I feel like me bringing energy is going to help everybody else, bringing energy to the defensive side. “I wanted to run my game in a mature way, a lot of pace, adding that to my game and being smarter on the court with making better decisions.”
The New York Knicks are hot after Donovan Mitchell, but they have to be careful not to end up bidding against themselves in trade talks with the Utah Jazz. We know Danny Ainge has a history of asking for, and often getting, the world, and indeed, Ainge recently asked the Knicks for a king’s ransom in exchange for Mitchell. According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, Utah offered Mitchell to New York for six future first-round draft picks plus Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin and Miles McBride, but the Knicks “backed away” from that proposal.
In those conversations and prior ones, according to a source, the Jazz asked for a huge, essentially unprecedented return for Donovan Mitchell. The Knicks can trade a maximum of eight first-round picks outright — the Jazz want a majority of those picks. They also asked for pick swaps down the road. Finally, they also asked for some combination of youngsters Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, Miles McBride, and Cam Reddish. Grimes is perhaps the lead target among those players for Utah.
The addition of Brunson and return of Derrick Rose likely leaves McBride, the Knicks’ second-round pick a year ago who only appeared in 40 games, as the third-string point guard. But his self-belief hasn’t changed. “Confidence can’t waver, not in this league,” said the former West Virginia star, who had 16 points, four assists and three steals in the Knicks’ 88-77 loss to the Trail Blazers on Monday night. “If that happens, then you’re going to be stuck in the mud. So I’m trying to stay as confident as I can.”
